A 71-year-old man died as a result of injuries he sustained after being beaten in his home at Saul and Anchor streets Monday night.
The suspected killer is the man’s 44-year-old mentally ill neighbor, who police say used a pole, a shovel, a chair and his bare hands to bludgeon the elderly victim.
The attacker, whose name has not been released, then barricaded himself in his home. Police say the man owns several weapons and should be considered extremely dangerous. It is unclear what triggered the attack.

I grew up in that section of Philadelphia. This use to be a very nice neighborhood. As time went by, the area deteriorated. I remember called the police to help with a car that was driving around and around the streets all night at excessive speeds of 60 mph. This was not the first time either. When the police arrived, they witnessed this crazy driver and did absolutely nothing, except tell the driver who called the police. Of course they came to my house and asked me why I called the police on them. I realized then that Philadelphia was doomed. It did not take me long to move out of Philadelphia for good. In the meantime, my father stayed in his house only to have his car hit while it was parked. The mailman witnessed this and wrote down the license number and he and my dad called the police. They showed up the next day! By that time, the car had been reported stolen so no charged could be brought up. He purchased a new used car a few years later – it was stolen. Everyone had their car stolen on that block in time. Who wants to live under those conditions? Too bad there is no law and order anymore in Philadelphia. It is a war zone! P.S. I remember being asked to move off the corner while finishing our ice cream at 9:30pm on night. We did as we were told. Philadelphia was quiet back then. Gosh was that over 35 years ago? I miss the old Philadelphia where I grew up.
