Right NEast/Wrong NEast: Fairhill’s not even close 0

Feb26

Outside media don’t care about the Northeast. We have all seen them misuse, misspell and mistake our neighborhoods and our streets, so we at NEast mag wanted to do something about it. When they get it wrong, we set it right in a segment we like to call Right NEast/Wrong NEast.

By Shannon McDonald

The latest installment of Right NEast/Wrong NEast comes to us from MURL, Temple University’s senior journalism class.

In a post about North Philly’s Fairhill neighborhood on MURL’s blog, one student writes:

The people who inhabit this area around 5th street and Lehigh avenue in Northeast Philadelphia are as proud of their Latino heritage as anyone you will find.

Granted, these are student journalists from all over who’ve been assigned to cover neighborhoods they’re completely unfamiliar with. That being said, this is a pretty big oversight that even a quick visit to Google Maps could have corrected.

We’ll call it a learning experience.
