No press is bad press? Philadelphia blog calls out the Northeast 10

Northeast Philly, meet your signature hairstyle

Northeast Philly, meet your signature hairstyle

If they’re covering us, they’re either getting it wrong or making fun of us.

Not that I’d call Philebrity “big media,” but they gave the Northeast a little attention today, and not the good kind. In a post about Kate Gosselin’s hair, the Northeast takes a beating:

We’ve seen that hair before. We know that hair. We’ve seen it in the Wawa, buying smokes; we’ve seen it at Target, verbally abusing its children; and we’ve seen it at events, whispering mutedly racist tropes. In fact, anywhere where the Curiously De-Feminized Women Of The Northeast doth roam, so too does That Hair.

You read correctly folks, we’re being called low-class, child abusing racists. And if you’ve heard the recent drama surrounding Jon & Kate Plus 8, you’re all bad parents, too.

What do you think? Is this good-natured fun, or is Philebrity giving the Northeast a bad rep?

I hate to say it, but this STEREOTYPE does seem to have some teeth to it. When my wife and I moved to NE Philadelphia some time ago we were surprised how many women didn’t seem to take care of themselves. I mean, it’s still caricature, it’s still stereotype, but after living in several different parts of the country it seems to me that NE Philly is worse than everywhere else I’ve ever lived when it comes to this.

Here’s the true test…walk down your street and tell me how many females are wearing sweatpants or pajama pants. If it’s after 11am and any of them are more than 8 years old, we have a problem…

Take it with a grain of salt. I’ve lived in the NE most of my life, aside from a brief stint in Queen’s village and Fairmount. And what Philebrity says about the women does has some truth to it.
But Philebrity–and I like Philebrity–is a site for a mostly younger crowd comprised of a lot of people who probably aren’t from Philadelphia, but may be from the ‘burbs or worse, the mid-west.
It’s safe for them to make fun of a white, working-class area of the city, and still seem liberal.

    LETS GO PENS!

    It is bullsh*t!

Once again, the Northeast takes an unwarranted rap.

  • Get a real job, hipster

Just ignore what Philebrity says. Its run and read by elitist hipsters who want to see Philly become more like New York City (and by that I mean the hipster mecca of Brooklyn). While I think some of “that” ilk are decent people, a lot are just holier-than-thou jerks.

Of course they’re not trying to give us a bad rep! It’s just “social commentary”: http://www.philebrity.com/2009/05/28/everythings-better-in-the-northeast-understanding-kate-gosselins-hair/#comment-11564

They’ll show some appreciation as soon as we get a few more people on fixed-gear bikes to migrate up here.
