Outside media don’t care about the Northeast. We have all seen them misuse, misspell and mistake our neighborhoods and our streets, so we at NEast mag wanted to do something about it. When they get it wrong, we set it right in a segment we like to call Right NEast/Wrong NEast.

The city’s larger media outlets could not agree this weekend when a speeding driver injured two police officers early Sunday morning.
The accident happened around 1 a.m. on the 4200-block of Aramingo Avenue. That’s about all the reporters can agree on. continue reading »

Assets are only the things that make you money.
Kevin Kiene said that is a mantra he took from Robert Kiyosaki, the author of Rich Dad, Poor Dad.
“Yes, I’m living in a house that’s worth $60,0000, and I probably should be living in a more expensive home,” said Kiene, who grew up in Fox Chase and now lives near the Smedley Franklin School in Frankford. “But the business is so important to me. So, that’s where the money goes.” continue reading »

In a recent Northeast Times article, Franklin Mills Mall manager (and Washington High School alum) Joseph Binder, said he has been listening carefully to Northeast residents – particularly, those who like to read.
Binder mentioned that the outlet mall has been working on negotiations with a major book retailer. Though he can’t many more details, Binder also said he is in talks with a popular value store looking to take over the old Kay-Bee toy store location. These additions would join the 13 new stores that have come to the mall in the last two years.

A triple shooting at a Pratt Street bar had officers rushing to the scene around 1:15 this morning.
Dallas Custalow, 25, was shot in the stomach at the Irish Kitchen at Pratt and Oakland streets after two men began shooting at each other across the bar. One of the shooters suffered a gunshot wound to the head and remains in critical condition. The other was hit in the thigh.
Authorities and witnesses say Custalow was an innocent bystander. His family was called to the scene shortly after the shooting to identify his body. Family members said he stopped at the bar after going to the movies. Custalow is also the son of the 71-year-old man who died after being beaten with a trash can by his elderly neighbor at Saul and Anchor streets in February.

Here’s a summary of the week’s Northeast news we didn’t cover. See others here.
Eight of the Philadelphia Police Department’s 10 transmitters shut down Wednesday, leaving parts of the Northeast without police communications. A faulty Verizon component was to blame, forcing officers to rely on cell phones for two hours. continue reading »

Q: I called a real estate agent on a sale sign, and he showed me the house. He asked me to sign a paper and said that he is a “dual agent.” It sounded scary to me. What does it mean?
A: There are four types of relationships among real estate agents or brokers and consumers, and real estate agents are required by law to disclose that information to you. Dual agency is one of them. continue reading »

I can’t help it – I like Garfield.
Faithful viewers of the A&E cable television series Parking Wars know of whom I speak. Garfield is one of the many interesting and loveable – yes, I said lovable – characters whose day-to-day lives working for the Philadelphia Parking Authority are put on display for the viewing public. Garfield and his partner Sherry travel the streets of Philadelphia, booting vehicles owned by motorists who owe a lot of money for parking and other violations. Needless to say, they encounter their fair share of angry citizens along the way.
It is the televised altercations that are captured on video while booting, towing and waiting in line at the impound lot that has brought the Parking Authority and Parking Wars under fire in recent weeks. The show was blamed Sunday in a Philadelphia Inquirer editorial for potentially hurting the city’s tourism industry. One angry reader called the Parking Authority a “disgrace,” and demanded that it be overhauled.
I understand being mad at the Parking Authority. I’ve been there. continue reading »
