I kind of agree. I enjoyed thinking about my childhood while reading this, though I admit I spent about half of my time indoors. I actually enjoyed that much better. I eventually grew out of it and yearned to be outside.

The camps thing though... they've been around forever. Nothing has changed there. Haven't you seen Meatballs!? That's from the 70's.

If camp was that cool, I'd be there in a heartbeat.

I have to agree. When I was growing up -and this was the early '90s, so not that long ago - I was always, always outside. Every day. Every season. Every version of tag, kick the can and freedom imaginable.

Nothing wrong with putting kids in camps or getting them swim lessons, but there's something to be said for letting them play outside their houses and using their imaginations.

You are so right! If you let your children run the streets, so to speak, you are looked down upon. Therefore, you sign them up for soccer, swim lessons, play dates etc. I wish they had a taste of what we had with playing in the back yard with friends in the pool, catching lighting bugs with the whole neighborhood, just playing in the driveway with friends, making mud pies at the playground sand box. There are always neighbors who think they are too loud or they are doing something wrong if they are in a group etc. So, I guess we all evolved to this. It is more costly, and time consuming for parents now, but as you mentioned, they stay out of trouble and are learning different things than we did. Sometimes different is not always bad.
