Right NEast/Wrong NEast: Tacholmesfair? 0

It’s one of the most recent high-profile news stories around the city: a 50-year-old blind woman beaten and raped inside her own home.

The story is a sensitive and shocking one, made all the more difficult to read when you consider its inaccuracies.

Similar to October’s rape attempt in Holme Circle, the larger media outlets in the city can’t agree on which neighborhood the brutal attack took place in.

Some reports, like those from Fox and the Inquirer, insisted the 7300-block of Torresdale is in Mayfair. Action News and NBC reported Holmesburg, and CBS didn’t dare speculate.

It’s not just the media fighting over this one. Folks over at Philadelphia Speaks are discussing whether Torresdale Avenue between Cottman and Bleigh is Mayfair, Holmesburg or Tacony. And to be honest, the NEast Philly staff had some trouble with this one, too.

We initially took Mayfair out of the running, but there are Mayfair neighborhood flags hanging on the 7300-block of Torresdale, across the street from Russo Park. Can you blame a reporter who’s likely never in the Northeast for calling it Mayfair?

So it comes down to Holmesburg and Tacony, and it gets a little subjective. If you consider Cottman Avenue the border between Tacony and Holmesburg, then this happened just inside the Holmesburg borders. But as everyone knows, it’s the people who live in a neighborhood who best determine what it’s called.

Our staff is sticking with Holmesburg for now, but if we get some comments with solid proof to the contrary, we’ll take a second look.

Outside media don’t care about the Northeast. We have all seen them misuse, misspell and mistake our neighborhoods and our streets, so we at NEast Philly wanted to do something about it. When they get it wrong, we set it right in a segment we like to call Right NEast/Wrong NEast.

I moved to Holme Avenue when I was 1 year old. I am now 55. The area of Torresdale and Cottman is definitely Mayfair. St. Hubert’s is considered in Mayfair. My sister attended Hubert’s back in the sixties. It’s definitley Mayfair. There was never any doubt back then that that area is Mayfair whyis there doubt now.

Eileen — thanks for your thoughts and your perspectives. As you can see from the article, there is some debate. There are Mayfair flags hanging in front of Hubert’s, but the area around Cottman and Torresdale is actually covered by Mayfair, Tacony and Holmesburg civic and town watch groups, so you can see where that might get confusing.

Shannon- I will have to agree with Eileen. Cottman and Torrsedale is Mayfairand i know cause I grew up on 4600 Bleigh and play for Mayfair AC in Russo Park. And for my 25 years there it was always Mayfair. Tahnks,

Buddy — thanks for the input! You’ve been able to answer one of the questions we’ve been debating: does Mayfair AC use Russo’s fields. Appreciate it!

I live in the area. To me, the border for Mayfair is Frankford Ave. East of Frankford Ave south of Cottman is Tacony, north is Holmesburg. Mayfair AC *uses* Russo’s fields, they also use some local school gyms for their indoor sports, so you can’t define it as Mayfair just because of Mayfair AC. Also, I hear so many refer to the area as Mayfair, because of what I think is the more positive association of saying Mayfair (i.e. East Mayfair, which doesn’t exist). Wikipedia says that Tacony goes to Cottman, and Holmesburg starts at Sheffield, and their Mayfair article makes no mention of this area. So is this 4-5 block stretch completely unidentified?

Russo Park was originally called Tacony Park. Thomas Holmes’s grave, of which Holmesburg gets it name is on Holme Ave in Pennypack Park(originally called Pammapac by the Indians) at the Wooden Brigde Creek by the Holme Circle.
