Right NEast/Wrong NEast: Mayfair is expanding 4

If you’re looking for something to do any time, any place in Philadelphia, you can find it on uwishunu.

But since the site is sponsored by the city’s tourism board, and tourists don’t typically visit the Northeast, don’t rely on uwishunu for neighborhood information from our region.

Case in point: Burger Bar/Gallo’s Seafood. Both located at Roosevelt Boulevard and Holme Avenue at Pennypack Circle. Translation: definitely not Mayfair. But, um, uwishunu calls that Mayfair.

Here’s what neighborhoods we would have accepted: Lexington Park, Pennypack, Holme Circle. But once you cross Cottman Avenue going north on the Boulevard, you’re not in Mayfair anymore. And if that doesn’t convince you, Burger Bar/Gallo’s 19152 zip code should.

It’d be nice if the tourism board had a better grasp on the Northeast, even if the tourists aren’t flooding our region.

Outside media don’t care about the Northeast. We have all seen them misuse, misspell and mistake our neighborhoods and our streets, so we at NEast Philly wanted to do something about it. When they get it wrong, we set it right in a segment we like to call Right NEast/Wrong NEast.

  1. We (Philly Tourism / uwishunu) definitely know that people feel passionate about their neighborhoods!

In fact, our blogger Cathy, who wrote the Burger Bar post, is actually from the Northeast herself. She’s aware that her Northeast neighbors would have strong opinions about what blocks are or are not Mayfair, but I think we can all agree on one thing: it’s great to put so much attention on an area little-known to most visitors (and many residents).

I appreciate what you are doing with the very existence of this site and you generally do a great job of reporting news. That being said, I am sorry to disagree with one of your points. While it is definitely true that Gallo’s is not in Mayfair, the northern border for Mayfair is not Cottman Ave. I live on Sandyford Ave (which has a 19152 zip code), and my family and neighbors all definitely call our area Mayfair. I would say a more accurate border (at least on the eastern side of Lincoln H.S.) is Pennypack Park and Ryan Ave. Sorry to nitpick, but if you are going to get on uwishunu.com’s case, someone also needs to get on yours.

Also just as another point, I have seen uwishunu.com make a great effort when it comes to touting the great eateries the Northeast has to offer (from Three Monkeys to the Grey Lodge). While Mayfair may have been a little off, you were close enough. GPTMC: Your efforts are greatly appreciated!

  3. Thanks for your thoughts. And I agree with you — and GPTMC — that neighborhood boundaries are argued even by the people who live there. You’re probably right about the Ryan Ave. boundary. That area often gets referred to as Sandyford Park, but typically gets lumped in as part of Mayfair.
