Right NEast/Wrong NEast: Tacony now going by Frankford and Port Richmond 3

Philly.com is the home of the Philadelphia Inquirer and the Philadelphia Daily News — the city’s only two “city-wide” papers.

Neither paper knows where Tacony is. Last we checked, Tacony is part of Philadelphia, and shouldn’t be something our papers of record confuse with other neighborhoods.

But over the weekend, Tacony was called Port Richmond and Frankford by the Inquirer and Daily News, respectively.

In the papers’ coverage of dog two separate dog killings, the Philly.com editors had trouble deciding where the incidents took place. For the record, both were in Tacony.

The 4500-block of Hale Street is not in Port Richmond, despite the Inqy report. And no, Daily News, Ditman and Levick streets do not intersect in Frankford. After being called out on Twitter by Frankford resident Mike Ferris, the Daily News changed its headline to read “Northeast Philly” instead, making no mention of the neighborhood error. But if you look at the article’s URL, the neighborhood still says Frankford.

Let’s do some math. 2 dog shootings + 2 newspapers + 2 reporters + 2 neighborhoods – one map = Philly.com doesn’t know where Tacony is. Or Frankford or Port Richmond, for that matter.

Outside media don’t care about the Northeast. We have all seen them misuse, misspell and mistake our neighborhoods and our streets, so we at NEast Philly wanted to do something about it. When they get it wrong, we set it right in a segment we like to call Right NEast/Wrong NEast.

I think the 4500 block of Hale is actually Wissinoming. At least everyone I grew up with in the neighborhood would consider it so. Some could even make a case for Ditman and Levick being in Wissinoming (not me though).

Anyway, PhillyDotCom sent me a message that read: “Michael – Thanks for pointing this out. Normally, we don’t correct stories from the paper, but this was pretty obvious from looking at a map.”

This message was referring to the Ditman and Levick story, not the Hale St story, which in my opinion, was a bigger mistake.

Well, it happened again today. There was a story about a shooting in “Olney”, but when I pointed it out that the shooting was actually in Logan, the story was changed (Headline and body, but not URL). Maybe I should start receiving an editors stipend at the paper. This is a link to the story today.

Yes…4500 Hale St is Wissinoming….the split between Wiss & Tacony is around the corner at Robbins Ave, so Ditman & Levick would indeed be Tacony :)
