CBS3 continues tradition of labeling everything west of the Boulevard as Oxford Circle 2
Do you live west of Roosevelt Boulevard and south of Rhawn Street?
Then you live in Oxford Circle, according to CBS3. As little knowledge as the mainstream media have about the Northeast, they seem to be in particular need of a geography lesson on the west side of Roosevelt Boulevard. Because as many have done, and as CBS3 proves with this story, they tend to just label everything as Oxford Circle.
Nevermind that this incident took place in Burholme — just west of Algon Avenue and north of Tyson on the 6800-block of Dorcas Street. Or that in May 2009, CBS3′s article about a car crash at Penn Street and Cheltenham Avenue also supposedly happened in Oxford Circle.
For the record, neither of those neighborhoods qualifies as Oxford Circle, and they’re two miles apart.
Outside media don’t care about the Northeast. We have all seen them misuse, misspell and mistake our neighborhoods and our streets, so we at NEast mag wanted to do something about it. When they get it wrong, we set it right in a segment we like to call Right NEast/Wrong NEast.
Rhawnhurst native here. I still say that 6800 Dorcas is NOT in Burlholme. I work at the Navy Depot, which is about a quarter mile from 6800 Dorcas. It’s in Lawncrest, or maybe in this case it really is in Oxford Circle. Burlholme ain’t very big, consisting of the neighborhoods immediately adjacent to the park of the same name.
Thanks, Pete! I love hearing boundary differences according to people in the neighborhoods, rather than the media or a civic organization. In this case, we defer to the Burholme Civic/Business/Town Watch groups, who use the boundaries of Tyson Avenue, Algon Avenue, Rhawn Street and up to Burholme Park, as you suggested.
