Gun owners in the Northeast: Part 1 of 4 16

This is an AK-47 owned by Holmesburg resident Vince. It's a Yugoslavian import model M70AB2.
In following online forums and comments, we noticed crime stories around the Northeast often lead to discussions about gun ownership. In this four-part series, we’ll hear from four Northeast residents on why they own guns, and their beliefs surrounding gun laws.
This is Vince. The 34-year-old Holmesburg resident owns 12 guns.
NEast Philly: How long have you been a gun owner?
Vince: I finished my tour in the Marines 11 years ago, and ever since then I’ve owned firearms.
NEP: Why do you own a guns? Was there a specific event that motivated you to get one?
V: Nothing in-particular. My grandfather was an avid marksman and so was my dad — so its in our blood. We are all veterans.
NEP: Are your guns registered?
V: In the state of Pennsylvania, firearms are not kept on any legal registry. 18 Pa.C.S. § 6111.4: Registration of firearms: “Notwithstanding any section of this chapter to the contrary, nothing in this chapter shall be construed to allow any government or law enforcement agency or any agent thereof to create, maintain or operate any registry of firearm ownership within this Commonwealth. For the purposes of this section only, the term “firearm” shall include any weapon that is designed to or may readily be converted to expel any projectile by the action of an explosive or the frame or receiver of any such weapon.” With that being said they were all legally purchased.
NEP: Have you ever had to use, or come close to using your guns?
V: Never. And I hope to God I never have to.
NEP: Does owning guns make you feel safe?
V: Owning firearms is just another level of security as far as I am concerned. People lock their doors, turn on their porch lights, have home alarms and own firearms — all because of the criminal element in our neighborhoods.
NEP: Is owning guns relevant to where you live? Would you not own one if you lived someplace else?
V: I would own one regardless of where I lived, but I do agree that where we do live plays an important role in our decisions to own them.
Pictured are two of Vince’s handguns. At left is a Beretta 9000 9mm, and on the right is a Glock 22 .40cal.
NEP: Do you keep your guns loaded?
V: All of my semi-automatic handguns are always loaded with additional magazines available. On the other hand, my rifles and shotguns are unloaded but have ammunition stored with them if necessary.
NEP: Do you keep your guns locked?
V: They are always locked away unless I am carrying or going to the range. In pains me to hear that some child finds a handgun in dad’s sock drawer. A simple locked box costs nothing compared to a life.
NEP: How accessible are your guns when they’re not on you?
V: They are all easily accessible anywhere in the home.
NEP: Do you carry in the house, or in the street?
V: In the house, almost always. I may not carry a full-size handgun but I’ll easily carry, say, a smaller-framed semi — say a Sig P238 all day at home, washing the car or cutting the grass. In the street, always. I can be going to Wawa, walking my dogs, going to the mailbox or to my parents’ house for dinner. It doesn’t matter. Keys, wallet, cellphone, handgun, extra magazine…
NEP: Would you encourage others to own a gun?
V: Firearm ownership is not for everyone. Even though I am an avid shooter and NRA member, I believe that people should have rudimentary knowledge of how a firearm functions and its safety features. Its’ bad that you can walk into any shop, buy a handgun legally, and have no idea how to shoot it. I’ve seen people apply for concealed weapon permits that probably have never handled a firearm in their life. I do think that people wanting to own a firearm should take a basic safety course and do their research before making a purchase.

…gets bowl of popcorn, settles in for what will surely be an enlightening and entertaining series.
License to carry firearms. PA doesn’t issue a concealed weapons permit. Other than that, good job
knowing that people carry guns to wash the car and to the mailbox makes me feel like i need a gun out here! Dang!
Great start to what will hopefully be a solid article.
@maltydog: Unless you plan on assaulting or robbing someone that is washing their car or getting their mail because they seem more vulnerable, I don’t think you have anything to worry about.
Sounds like maltydog is threatened by gun owners…perhaps because we make business so difficult for his ilk?
Note to the editor** That first picture is NOT an AK-47, only an AK variant. AK-47s are fully automatic assault rifles.
very good answers vince… note to anyone reading this article… people like vince keep the crime rate down in philadelphia… there are many areas in the next state over that have much higher per capita crime rates… why? because criminals have to take a second to think before they rob a little old lady… because you might never know if janie has a gun… the more good people that do their part and get armed, the lower the crime rate. let’s all do our part to put a choke on crime!
Now now leave malty alone….and yes this is the Vince in the article…Crime doesn’t take a holiday my friends….so you can be anywhere doing anything when it rears its ugly head….so its best to be prepared…
Good article. Ne Philly is changing. Unemployment is really 23 %. You can’t go to any WAWa or supermarket without someone using a Access card. Nothing against people who don’t abuse the system that are on hard times. But what happens when a major event comes like the government cutting benefits for them or a major event like (major dollar devaluation (QE2), pandemic, EMP strike). Hungry bad people will do anything to eat. I just took my 66 year old mom to the shooting range and gun store last week to purchase a fire arm. It’s starting to get bad and not getting any better.
Consider how smart was the logic used by our founding Fathers when the right to bear arms was granted to civilians. Has anything changed that would disprove this logic??!
“Laws that forbid the carrying of arms…disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes…Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man.”
Thomas Jefferson
I served in the marines with Vince. I for one am not surprised by his answers. He was always a level headed man. I agree that gun ownership may not be for every one, but, I believe that it is intelligent, honest people like Vince that help keep our neighborhoods safe. Weather it is his concealed P238 in Philly or my .44 mag Bear deterrent here in Alaska, our decision to own could save our life or the lives of those around us some day. Like him I hope that Bear keeps its distance from me. Semper FI Vinnie!
I’m so scared of everything that ever since I saw ‘Psycho’, I’ve kept a small handgun under a fake bar of soap in my bathroom. Like Vince, I agree that you just never know when somebody’s gonna getcha.
malty isn’t threatened by gun owners Steve, shes just had her eyes opened about the amount of people out there carrying. I went to the bank the other day in town and had to walk through a metal detector, crazy.
Yeah my bank has a metal detector also…..needless to say I dont go inside that branch since I carry. Next time you go make sure to look for a sign that says what is and isnt permitted inside the bank. I bet you wont see one.
while inside i comment off hand to others in line that some signs would help the whole process and i was (rather rudely) informed by a teller that there were signs on the door. So when i exited i check and yea there was a sign, in about 8 point font, in white letters on a glass door, nice.
