Right NEast/Wrong NEast: Northeast is now hip and part of Riverwards 2

Apr6

Ask any Philadelphia newcomer living in Fishtown, Port Richmond or Kensington where they live and they’re likely to tell you the Northeast. That misconception has now been extended beyond those boundaries, into the widest reaches of Northern Liberties.

Kudos to NEast Philly reader John Gormely for pointing out this laughable mistake from the Inquirer:

While the city hasn’t disclosed where the lanes will be created, a route that connected with the Frankford El stop on Spring Garden would link hip neighborhoods in the lower Northeast by subway-and-bike trips.”

The excerpt, from an editorial about new bike lanes in Philadelphia, suggests neighborhoods like Fishtown and Spring Garden (specifically, the Spring Garden El stop), are part of the Northeast.

The real clue here that the Inquirer has no idea what it’s talking about is the use of the word “hip.” Would the paper really describe actual lower Northeast neighborhoods like Frankford, Wissinoming, Oxford Circle and others as hip? Well, first the editors would have to find those neighborhoods.

Outside media don’t care about the Northeast. We have all seen them misuse, misspell and mistake our neighborhoods and our streets, so we at NEast mag wanted to do something about it. When they get it wrong, we set it right in a segment we like to call Right NEast/Wrong NEast.

Oh boy. I got this one before, just the opposite way around. I told someone who didn’t live exactly in the city & I believe was a transplant that I live in Port Richmond, which is a 5-minute drive away from (the northern side of) Penn’s Landing & they asked me if that was in the northeast. Then it became a back & fourth thing if me saying where the NE starts, and wondering how a 5-minute drive from Penn’s Landing can take someone to the northeast.

It is the Northeast. Not the Far Northeast. Not the Near Northeast. But it is included, when talking about parts of Philadelphia, as part of the Greater Northeast. Sorry to tell you. Now if you want to talk specific neighborhoods that is something else. Look it up on a map people. Check Wikipedia. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northeast_Philadelphia
