Aug30

An estimated 750 people attended a meeting at Lincoln High School to protest the methadone clinic proposed for the 7900-block of Frankford Avenue in Holmesburg.

A bus will depart Lincoln High School at noon tomorrow, carrying residents from Holmesburg, Mayfair and beyond to Center City, where a hotly contested methadone clinic will come under review at the Zoning Board of Adjustment.

Councilwoman Joan Krajewski and others are expected to ask the city to remove the proposed clinic’s over-the-counter permit and prevent it from operating at Frankford Avenue and Decatur Street.

The permit is legal under the current zoning regulations, but has been protested by neighbors, business owners, civic associations and politicians for the applicant’s apparent lack of qualifications and unwillingness to communicate with neighborhood leaders.

The meeting is set for 1 p.m.

these people are sick and they need the help, rich people are always trying to push the poor & sick away.
    How about helping your neighbor!

The people who live in the neighborhood are looking out for their children, and you can’t blame them either. Gina your a fool to think that particular area as “rich”. Typical liberal comment, “how about helping your neighbor” Guess what my tax dollars are paying for those meds for those losers, thats help enough.

I am on a methadone clinic in camden new jersey. I don’t appreciate the person who said their taxes pay for the meds for us losers. There are quite a few of us who also pay taxes such as myself. Loser I am not. Yes I made mistake in my lifetime and those mistakes are the reason that I am working so hard to rectified my past and to atone for the ones I hurt while falling down that road. It is not easy to do but we work hard at bring ourselves back up and apologizzing to those we hurt. You so called winner don’t have the respect within to atone to others so if I had a choice I would say you goodie to shoes are the real losers.

I understand people are trying to get there lives back together, and some are using it to get a (leagal) drug. But putting this right in the heart of a area with schools and librarys , and daycares. It just seems that a better location.like in a real medical building. With real doctors, seems to be a better idea.Make sure it is public transportation easy.I think this is a better idea. And i think those who use it and have families will understand why our community feels this way.

theres a school on the same block as the clinic. The children should not be exposed to this atmosphere. Bottom line. All this clinic will do is deplete the neighborhood even more.

If you want to see what a methadone clinic looks like in a neighborhood and on a commercial street, come to the 4600 block of Frankford Ave. where the Northeast Treatment Center is located. There are ex-cons and methadone addicts and people with ankel monitors hanging outside the clinic.

And here is the kicker: the President of this clinic is on the Board of Directors of the Frankford CDC.

  • Larry Gershel

Of course everyone needs a chance to straighten out their lives, but let’s be honest, most of these people just have an interest in trying to use a different drug to appear as if they are trying to quit.
They will never quit with methadone, they will only manage their addiction.
Just look at the neighborhoods where there are these clinics, assess the crime rates, look at the streets, see who is working and who are hanging out. Let’s not be delusional, sure these people need help, but these clinics are money making places and that is exactly what they are doing, without concern for the families, and businesses that are in these areas.
Sure they need an opportunity too get better, but not at the cost of everyone else.
