UPDATE: Authorities confirm the passenger in the car, identified as Elizabeth Jones, died overnight as a result of her injuries.

An elderly woman died Monday afternoon after her car left the roadway and plunged into Pennypack Creek.

The driver, a woman in her 70s, somehow lost control of her 3006 Lincoln Town Car along the winding 8500-block of Krewstown Road. She was pronounced dead at the scene and her 71-year-old passenger was listed in extremely critical condition at Aria Health-Torredale.

The car was pulled from the creek Monday night.
