Delving into Tacony’s industrial history 0

Oct21

Philip Scranton (L) and Walter Lict (R) discuss Tacony's history in Philadelphia's industry.

Wednesday, residents of Tacony gathered at the Tacony Branch of the Free Library to reflect on their city’s rich history. The Encyclopedia of Greater Philadelphia hosted the presentation, Workshop of the World, which focused on the industrial revolution in Philadelphia.

The organization is a civic project that aims to increase the understanding of Philadelphia, and to serve as a
reference source in regards to the city’s history.
The presentation included a panel discussion from local historians Philip Scranton, Walter Licht, Daniel Siorick and Carla Bednar. Through the 90-minute discussion, the panelists shared information about the significant role industrial workers played in Philadelphia’s livelihood in the 19th and 20th centuries. Also discussed was the rise of specialized markets particular to the area, and how the city’s immigrant population aided in the creation of factories.

“Philadelphia was not a city that had one lone industry. It had factories creating everything under the
sun,” said Licht.
