Yesterday’s groundbreaking at Larnder’s Point Park is the first noticeable step of many in a process that will bring a new park to Tacony.

Part of Delaware River City Corp.’s plan to connect neighborhoods along the Delaware River, the park at Levick Street near the Tacony-Palmyra Bridge will feature a river overlook, fishing pier and green space.

The $1.5 million project is funded by the state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the National Wildlife Fund. The projected May 2012 opening will bring a water fountain, walking trails and park furniture to what is currently a concrete slab. It’s made possible in part by a zoning change from commercial to recreational in the space between Milnor Street, Levick  Street, Robbins Streets and the Delaware River.
