Mayfair Town Watch gives it another go under new leadership 0

Dec27

Mayfair residents will try again to form a town watch.

The group started fresh more than two years ago, shortly after the Mayfair Civic Association assumed new leadership and liquidated all assets the previous membership had accumulated.

But that town watch effort fizzled out after a series of weekly meetings, training sessions and talks of taking on other neighborhoods’ town watch efforts. Determined to try again, Mayfair residents have organized a meeting for Monday, Jan. 9 for the third incarnation in as many years.

You might recognize the guy leading the effort. He’s Milt Martelack — a Mayfair resident with a background in security who’s been working the town watch beat in parts of Holmesburg, Tacony and Mayfair. He also manned the megaphone at the July and September rallies against a proposed methadone clinic in Holmesburg.

Mayfair residents interested in attending the meeting should email mayfairtownwatch AT gmail.com or go to the 7 p.m. meeting at the John Perzel Center Community [map] Jan. 9.

Hi I was wondering why John Vearling is not the President any more, was he kicked out? Glad to see him go.

  • Margartet

I was wondering what happened to the last town watch group and why John Vearling is no longer the president?

  • Lily

I was also wondering why John Vearling was out, I guess he was all talk and no show?

Boy you kids have a tall order ahead of you. Mayfair is a mess. Pure and simple. A total mess. I took a tour of the place a couple of days ago. All over the place. Garage doors shoved in, collapsing decks, plastic kiddie playsets on every weed infested lawn. Grilles on the front porches, beater cars on the sidewalk, fences falling over and trash everywhere – except for a few streets that seem to have some sense of pride.

Mr. Boyle, get down to MSB. Get Fran in L&I to people out of Center City, South Philly and Kensington and get up to Mayfair and start fining these people for violating the property maintenance zoning codes.

    Lily,

All comments on our site that warrant a response get one. It seems an internal error with comment alerts (all comments are typically emailed to the author of the story) prevented me from seeing previous comments until I received an email today alerting me to yours.

The new town watch met for the first time Monday, and we’ll be reporting on it forms and as details come in. When you’re looking for a response and don’t receive one from us, you always have the option to call or email. That information is on our contact page.

    Thanks.

  • Lily

    Lily,

Just to be clear, NEast Philly is a news publication, not the website for the Mayfair Town Watch. Our coverage of the town watch in unrelated to the group’s effectiveness.
