Right NEast/Wrong NEast: Philly.com uses the wrong neighborhood and the wrong neighborhood name 2

Apr24

When it rains it pours.

Not only is Philly.com having trouble with its map again, but the reporters are still struggling with using the Castor Gardens’ whole name.

A news brief published March 19 about a car accident on the 1700-block of Cottman Avenue was set in “the City’s Castor section.”

They must mean Castor Gardens, which yes, goes by its full name. You’d think that because city players Alan Butkovitz and Jonathan Saidel both come from the neighborhood the bigger media outlets could at least get the name right.

But that matters little, anyway, because Castor Gardens isn’t even the right neighborhood. The accident was too far north. Philly.com could have gotten away with Burholme or Rhawnhurst, given the intersection’s juxtaposition between the two.

But the site’s model for getting things wrong seems to be go big or go home.

Outside media don’t care about the Northeast. We have all seen them misuse, misspell and mistake our neighborhoods and our streets, so we at NEast Philly wanted to do something about it. When they get it wrong, we set it right in a segment we like to call Right NEast/Wrong NEast.

“Castor Gardens,” sounds nice but I’ve yet to see it identified on a map. I think I’m living in Castor Gardens but can’t be sure. Even this site, “NEast Phila.” doesn’t have a map or has anyone truly identified its boundaries.
Doesn’t seem like an official area. Sure would be nice to know where Castor Gardens is.

    Jim,

We’re working with civic associations and the Planning Commission to draw a comprehensive map of Northeast neighborhoods. It’s coming together as the city works on its plan to identify and rezone neighborhoods.
