Right NEast/Wrong NEast: Action News extends Burholme’s boundaries 4

“Elderly woman beaten in Burholme home invasion,” read the July 11 Action News headline.

It struck fear in people, naturally. But people in Burholme – or with elderly relatives in Burholme – were put on high alert for no reason.

The home invasion took place on the 8100-block of Algon Avenue in Rhawnhurst (north of Rhawn Street and in a different zip code than Burholme).

Violent crime is a sensitive issue, and Action News did the public a severe disservice by misinforming readers about such a serious issue.

Outside media don’t care about the Northeast. We have all seen them misuse, misspell and mistake our neighborhoods and our streets, so we at NEast Philly wanted to do something about it. When they get it wrong, we set it right in a segment we like to call Right NEast/Wrong NEast.

You’re giving them flack over one block?

“put on high alert for no reason.” I think this is a poor article for one block would you have ever ran another article to warn those resitents about other crimes in the area unless you can find fault in anything if that is all you want to do. Try to say somethig go about it. you might try: Although they missed by a block they at lease go the ward out to stay alert. You know if that comes with all the wrong locations it’s a good trade off

You make a great point, Phil.

Do you have thoughts on what the cut-off should be for accuracy? Maybe one block is too close a call. And one point we like to highlight with all the Right NEast/Wrong NEast posts is that the location is the easiest part of a story to fact check. What other details could possibly have been overlooked if something like this goes unedited?

Liam, it’s the difference between someone thinking “Oh, that’s close to where I live” versus “That’s the area where I live!”

The media are supposed to verify the facts of a story before they report it. The more we avoid “giving them flak” over errors like this, the less diligent they are in getting it right.
