Right NEast/Wrong NEast: NBC10 confuses Mayfair with Nicetown, tries to cover up error 3

What could be worse than a TV news station reporting a shooting in Nicetown happened in Mayfair?

How ’bout rewriting the headline and the story to pretend the error never happened?

NBC10 showed up at a shooting scene at Germantown Avenue and Pike Street in North Philadelphia where police shot a man in the chest. Scary enough, as @letmebegreat pointed out on Twitter. Also scary to think NBC cares so little about giving accurate news to its audience.

So how did NBC address its mistake? It didn’t. There’s no reference to Mayfair in the story anymore. But tweets don’t lie (neither do URLs – look closely at the one in the NBC story):

Outside media don’t care about the Northeast. We have all seen them misuse, misspell and mistake our neighborhoods and our streets, so we at NEast Philly wanted to do something about it. When they get it wrong, we set it right in a segment we like to call Right NEast/Wrong NEast.

Every time I hear a mistake in any networks naming of our sections in Philly, I always tell them about it. BUT, I have seen on hear that you promote a section in Philly called Lawncrest. There is no section called Lawncrest. It is Lawndale & Crescentville. Lawncrest is the name of the rec center and the Businessman’s Association. The reason Lawncrest is not named after a local soldier who was the first in that area to die in a war (Thomas Jardel for Jardel Rec Center. So they took the 2 names in the area and combined them. I worked for the fuire department for many years. There is a map of every section in Philly. I studied that map back then and there is no such area as Lawncrest. I still email the networks to tell them about their mistakes. They need some better researchers.

While you are correct about the history of the Lawncrest Rec naming, Lawncrest is now an acceptable neighborhood name for the area. City Planning used it in the new Lower Northeast plan, and many businesses along Rising Sun use it (Lawncrest Nails, Munchies in Lawncrest) I’ve lived in the neighborhood for 3 years and have found the use of ‘Lawncrest’ is highest around the rec. Generally above Levick St you here people use Lawndale and below Godfrey you here Crescentville(especiallly near Creighton School) Unfortuanely there are not definite borders and all three names are used by the areas residents.

Thanks, Fred. We refer to Lawndale and Crescentville as Lawncrest because they are unified and share a civic association.
