Steve Brennan and his wife Shirley, both long-time Philadelphia Zoo members, brought their 5- year-old grandson, Reece Henry, to see Santa and enjoy the festivities--after he finishes his sandwich of course.
Children and their families were able to find a warm place to spend a chilly December Saturday –at the Philadelphia Zoo inside the Tree House. There, they were entertained with solo and group performances that were accompanied by the sounds of DJ Smooth Rod and DJ Snoop from Shadow Trax. continue reading »

Bones, a 3-year-old Cockapoo, took his mistress Michelle for an early evening walk in Lawndale Sunday. Bones' legs are barely five inches, but he managed to pick his way along cleared paths with an occasional romp in the deeper stuff. He must like a cold belly, but he doesn't care much for cameras. Bones is a lucky dog; Michelle claimed him at a rescue shelter.
One of the biggest snowstorms in the history of the city blanketed the region over the weekend. Residents in the Northeast were left with the task of shoveling and salting, and now our streets are slushy, icy messes.
But let’s admit it: snow can be pretty. If you’ve already forgotten what a winter wonderland looks like, take a look at this slideshow – the first of two – with some happy holiday photos.

With a flick of a switch at last Sunday's holiday ceremony, Santa lit the newly trimmed tree gracing the intersection of Frankford and Cottman.
It’s not a big tree. It’s certainly not as big a tree as you might expect for its intended purpose–to be seen by anyone walking or driving around the intersection of Frankford and Cottman avenues; but it’s not a Charlie Brown Christmas tree, either.
On Sunday Nov. 22, around dusk, folks from Mayfair Business Association and members of the community — young and old alike — strung lights and affixed ornaments on the community’s holiday tree. Santa arrived after darkness had embraced the assembled audience; he flicked a switch, and the tree lit up, a bright star atop, and the people cheered. continue reading »

The game gets underway as Washington's freshman kicker (and perhaps future QB) Jake Wright puts his foot to the ball while fellow teammate, Bryant Blair starts downfield on return coverage.
In the first rematch of the Public League vs. the Catholic since 1979, George Washington High School Eagles, with an impressive record of 10-1, defeated the heavily favored La Salle College High School Explorers, 23-14, to claim the AAAA City Championship Title. The big cameras and film crews were noticeably present.
Lest you think you’ve fallen into a time warp I’ll be quick to point out that that was last year. This year it was a role reversal with a different score, and La Salle lay claim to the City Title, defeating Washington, 31-20. continue reading »

Santa, one of many honored guests at last Sunday's Parade of Talent, cuddles 3-month-old Feona Conti, who got a little help from grandmom Katie.
The parade was held indoors. Wait, you say, indoors? Yes, the 34th Annual Mayfair-Holmesburg Parade, this year billed as the “Parade of Talent,” took place indoors, at the John Perzel Community Center on Sunday from noon until 4 p.m.
Rain or shine, folks were told, the parade would take place. Indoors? You’d hope so.
So what happened? Why hold a parade indoors? In earlier years when it rained, the parade was postponed. But, Sunday it wasn’t raining. It was a bright sunny day, all day. It would have been a wonderful day to be outdoors, watching a parade.
As an old friend used to quip, “It ain’t like it usta was.” There were no floats nor marching bands. The Lu Lu Shrine Temple motorcycle troop did not perform. The military reserve vehicles and classic cars were no where to be seen. continue reading »
