Report: ‘Anyone who cares about the future of Philadelphia should pay attention to the state and fate of the Northeast’ 3

Northeast Philadelphia

Whether you love your Northeast Philly neighborhood, or you’re one of our commenters who laments the changes you’ve seen over the years, you should read this piece from Hidden City contributor Sandy Smith about Philadelphia’s middle class neighborhoods. No surprise, the piece devotes a lot of attention to the Northeast.

Right NEast/Wrong NEast: CBS3 mistakes Harrowgate for Northeast 0

CBS3 moved the Tacony/Frankord Creek and nobody told us.

Back in December the station reported that a pregnant woman was struck by a stray bullet “inside aNortheast Philadelphia home.” The victim suffered no critical injuries, but CBS managed to make worse an already unfortunate situation. continue reading »

Right NEast/Wrong NEast: NBC puts Olney in the Northeast 0

Seriously, NBC, there is an entire creek designating the Northeast Philly boundary; how hard can this be?

“School bus vs. SEPTA bus in NE Philly,” read the headline on the evening of Jan. 3. There were no other details, just that there had been a crash “along Roosevelt Boulevard in Northeast Philadelphia.” continue reading »

Right NEast/Wrong NEast: Lincoln Highway pops up out of nowhere 1

What in the world?

Two strange things happened Nov. 16. First, a man opened fire on three women in a car on Roosevelt Boulevard near Harbison Ave. Luckily no one was hurt.

The second strange thing happened hours later inside the Philly.com building. The breaking news desk reported the shooting took place at the “Roosevelt Boulevard and Harbison Avenue intersection, which is next to Lincoln Highway.” continue reading »

Right NEast/Wrong NEast: When Bustleton Avenue becomes a neighborhood 1

In reporting the tragic death of an elderly man Oct. 22, Action News got right on the story. In the wrong neighborhood.

Imagine turning on the news to hear a 78-year-old man was killed in Bustleton – could it be someone you know? continue reading »

Right NEast/Wrong NEast: Northwood crash gets North Philly label 1

The 4600-block of Adams Avenue. It’s relativel leafy, runs parallel to Greenwood Cemetery and is roughly three blocks from Northwood Park. And oh yeah, it’s on the Northeast side of the  Frankford/Tookany Creek.

Why then, did NBC10 report that a car crash on that block happened in North Philadelphia? continue reading »

Right NEast/Wrong NEast: NBC10 confuses Mayfair with Nicetown, tries to cover up error 3

What could be worse than a TV news station reporting a shooting in Nicetown happened in Mayfair?

How ’bout rewriting the headline and the story to pretend the error never happened? continue reading »

Right NEast/Wrong NEast: CBS attributes Wissinoming animal cruelty case to Mayfair 0

Nearly two dozen animals were removed from a Wissinoming home last week and their owners were charged with animal cruelty.

It’s not a headline anyone wants to see, but CBS3 added insult to injury when it mis-reported the neighborhood. Though the 4300-block of Benner Street is blocks below the official Wissinoming/Mayfair border of Robbins Street, and off the beaten path of Frankford Avenue that the Mayfair Civic Association lays claim to, the station seemingly didn’t bother to properly identify the location, letting Mayfair take the fall. continue reading »

Right NEast/Wrong NEast: No really, Oxford Circle really is west of the Boulevard 5

Here we go again.

Imagine waking up to the headline, “Oxford Circle Teen Stabbed.” Anyone who wakes up with NBC10 doesn’t have to imagine it. While Action News and Philly.com both managed to read their maps properly, NBC10 dished out misinformation in a Tuesday morning crime report.

A teenager stabbed on the 1200-block of Pratt Street in Frankford Tuesday morning. Yes, that block is near Oxford Avenue, which we’re guessing is where NBC10 went wrong. continue reading »

Right NEast/Wrong NEast: N.J. media group plays it fast and loose 0

A few things raised our eyebrows about the South Jersey Media Group’s report on Philadelphia water main breaks.

First and foremost, why in the world would New Jerseyans care about such things?

An item that ran Wednesday on the company’s website about a Kensington water main break has seemingly no connection to New Jersey. And because we can’t logically expect N.J. media to be aware of Philadelphia neighborhoods, the report says the break on the 3500-block of Stouton Street happened in Northeast Philadelphia. continue reading »
