Westboro Baptist protests in NE Philly
“An everyday Christian’s point of view”

When I learned that the “good ‘ol righteous folks” from Westboro Baptist Church were going to hold protests at two Philadelphia Catholic High Schools it forced a group of people I was aware of from the back of my mind all the way to the forefront.  When you think of wolves in sheep’s clothing this is the pure example of that saying.   Their hatred for just about everything and everyone is on the news every now and then but to learn that they are going to be on our home turf in Northeast Philly really got me fired up.

How dare they!?!?! What right do they have!?!?!?!

Well as far as rights they do have them.  They have the right to peacefully gather and they have the right to their point of view. BUT, what they do not have the right to is total lack of common sense.   continue reading »

From Seven Mile Road Church:

Residents of the Bustleton neighborhood made the most of a beautiful summer evening by attending the second annual Community Night hosted by Seven Mile Road Church

Attendees sprawled out across the front lawn of the church. Children took turns jumping inside a large house-shaped moonbounce. Others giggled as they had their faces painted with butterflies and baseballs. Some of the adults played volleyball, while others tossed around a football or a frisbee. Everyone was treated to music and food while meeting new friends from the neighborhood. continue reading »

Each summer, it is common to find teenagers engaged in a myriad of activities at the Jersey Shore. From tanning to working to hanging out with friends, the Shore becomes the ultimate symbol of carefree relaxation.

However, for students, alumni and faculty from Archbishop Ryan High School, a yearly visit to Cape May Point involves a weekend of prayerful retreat and communal service as a way of supporting one another in living out their Kairos retreat.

As Johnny Langan, a 2008 Ryan graduate, stated, “The Kairos experience is an all-out great one, but adding community
service to this weekend just makes me feel all the more capable of making a difference.” continue reading »

Thursday’s water main break in Upper Holmesburg sent a geyser-like rush of water more than 100-feet into the air. While authorities got the situation under control, drivers on I-95 got a good look at the plume. Here’s our slideshow, with photos courtesy of Somerton’s Mike Korostelev.
