Frankford Y plan changes, still scheduled to reopen in September 1

It seems the Northwood Civic Association has made nice with the for-profit company poised take operational control over the storied Frankford Y.

“This has the prospects of being a well established part of the community,” civic President Barry Howell told nearly 40 residents inside the St. James’ church basement at Castor Avenue and Bridge Street Tuesday night.

It was Howell, of course, who said in December that he “sensed a rat” around the proposal. But Howell now says lots has changed since then.

Somerton man to face trial for wife’s death 0

gavel_1It was mid-November when 53-year-old Ashokkumar Guru was arrested in connection with his wife’s murder. Now it’s been decided he’ll face a jury.

Shakuntla Guru, 42, was beaten with a shovel, burned and then choked to death by her husband in their home on the 10800-block of Gifford Street on the morning of Nov. 12, 2009. At the time, there was speculation that the murder was a result of infidelity. continue reading »

The snow stopped falling nearly two days ago, but it’s not going anywhere anytime soon.

Piles of cold, white fluff still line sidewalks, and many narrow streets are quickly becoming sheets of ice as kids toss snowballs at one another from behind cars. Parents salt and shovel, and neighbors help one another move many a stuck car. continue reading »

A man wanted by Abington, Montgtomery County police officers is on the loose in the Northeast.

His car was last spotted on the 1200-block of Herschel Road in Somerton, but police have been mum about what he is wanted for.

Police shoot knife-carrying teen 0

A teenage boy is recovering after being shot by police last night on Grant Avenue near Academy Gardens.

Police spokesman Lt. Frank Vanore said 8th District officers ordered the teen to drop the knife when they encountered him on the 3400-block of Grant Avenue. The teen refused, then lunged at the officers, causing one of the officers to shoot the teen in the thigh.

The teenager is recovering at Aria Health’s Frankford campus.

The 2009 Frankford Festival was this weekend – a nice treat after having been rained out the weekend before.

Held at Overington Park at Leiper and Overington streets, the festival featured live music, a petting zoo, a moon bounce and perhaps most anticipated: the Northeast Philly Idol contestants.

Some readers were having difficulty reading NEast Philly while using the Internet Explorer Web browser.

Thanks to a consultation, everything should be in order both in IE and Mozilla Firefox, among other browsers. If not or if you every have any complaints, criticisms or concerns about the content or how it looks, please never hesitate to contact us. We’re a growing startup, so we need your help.

For those tech heads, you may be interested to know that our problem was that I foolishly failed to close a tag in our design code, and, while the Firefox browser was smart enough to correct the problem, IE rendered my code correctly — which was the mess some of you were seeing.
