Residents of the Bustleton neighborhood made the most of a beautiful summer evening by attending the second annual Community Night hosted by Seven Mile Road Church
Attendees sprawled out across the front lawn of the church. Children took turns jumping inside a large house-shaped moonbounce. Others giggled as they had their faces painted with butterflies and baseballs. Some of the adults played volleyball, while others tossed around a football or a frisbee. Saturday – A 19-year-old man was hospitalized early Saturday evening after being shot by police in Frankford. Officers encountered the man on the 4900-block of Griscom Street around 7:30 p.m., and noticed a gun in his waistband.
After running to a vacant lot, the man pulled his gun, and was shot by the officers. He was taken to Jefferson Hospital after being hit once in the back. Police recovered the weapon.

Police are looking for a prisoner who escaped from a medical center yesterday afternoon.
Maurice Wheeler left the center Monday without being noticed, and has not been seen since. While authorities use surveillance video to aid the case, anyone who spots Wheeler is encouraged to call police. continue reading »

An early morning watermain break in Bustleton — the fifth in the Northeast since June 5 — left streets covered in water and mud.
The break happened around Lott and Birwood streets around 6 a.m. While crews worked to fix the break and clean up the mess, there is no word on the cause.

Parkwood resident Beth Glynn was honored recently with the citywide award for Paramedic of the Year. State Rep. Brendan Boyle’s office presented Glynn with a citation from the Pennsylvania House of Representatives to honor her accomplishments.
At the Citation Presentation which took place at the medic unit where Glynn works regularly at Bustleton Avenue and Bowler Street, she met with Mark Fabbi and Kathleen Peiffer, legislative assistants to Boyle and Deputy Chief Joseph Mack.

A firefighter was injured overnight while battling a blaze in Bustleton. Colonial Electric Supply at Bustleton Avenue and Lott Street caught fire around 2:45 this morning, and firefighters rushed to the scene.
One firefighter was taken to Aria Health-Torresdale. His condition and the cause of the fire remain unknown.

Voting was once again the main topic at Wednesday’s Greater Bustleton Civic League meeting.
Members were to vote on a new vice president, but the issue over voting and bylaws extended to the subsequent zoning matters, and left a sour taste in many members’ mouths.
An issue at many civic associations in the region, voting regulations have proven to be a particularly sharp thorn in the GBCL’s side. continue reading »

Sean Hodges got a warm welcome yesterday upon his return to Anne Frank Elementary School.

A 13-year-old girl was assaulted Saturday in the Target store in Bustleton.
The girl was reportedly shopping with her mother when a man approached her and indecently assaulted the girl.
Details of the assault have not been released, but police are looking for a white male in his late 30s to early 40s. At the time of assault, he was wearing a dark t-shirt and light-colored shorts. He was seen leaving in a mid-size tan SUV.

Marc Collazzo is “a civic by nature.”
That’s what the Republican candidate for State Representative in the 17oth District told Burholme residents last night.
Collazzo — a Bustleton native — told the more than 20 residents who attended the monthly Burholme Civic Association and Town Watch meeting “we live in rare times.”
What’s rare about it, he said, is the recent behavior by state and city governments to support tax increases and “out of control spending.”
Collazzo, who attended Baldi Middle School and George Washington High School, told Burholme residents: “The most important thing you can ever do is help your neighborhood.” continue reading »
