Right NEast/Wrong NEast: When in doubt, call it Frankford 2

Dec19

We did a little consulting before running this one, worried we’re being too hard on news outlets that appear not to own maps or computers.

But friends in the neighborhood and the local media told us to persevere. A mistake is a mistake, after all, and we’ve corrected this one multiple times.

It’s the curious case of Frankford, in which large media outlets apply their lack of neighborhood knowledge to news reports by calling places Frankford. continue reading »

Right NEast/Wrong NEast: Many things go wrong when a bus crashes on Hunting Park Avenue 0

Dec15

Aside from the actual thing that went wrong Dec. 9 when a bus hit a teenage boy at Hunting Park and Kensington Avenue, the TV media outlets made sure some other things went wrong, too.

First, we know the crash happened on the other side of the Frankford Creek, meaning it didn’t occur in the Northeast. Strike one for Action News. continue reading »

Right NEast/Wrong NEast: Action News and CBS both confuse Frankford and Fishtown 2

Nov29

It’s pretty clear at this point big media outlets aren’t putting in the work it takes to discern a neighborhood from a street.

So that non of us has to do work, may we suggest that the city just expand Frankford to include everything on Frankford Avenue?

The southern-most Frankford border along the avenue is at the Torresdale Avenue intersection — 3.3. miles away, you’ll find the 1500- and 1700- blocks of Frankford Avenue. continue reading »

Right NEast/Wrong NEast: South side of Bridge Street is undeniably Frankford 0

Sep23

There’s some argument over Frankford’s northern border. Some say it’s Cheltenham Avenue; others say Bridge Street. Regardless, the shootings that played out this past spring on the 2000-block of Bridge Street were in Frankford.

Yet, Wissinoming residents got a scare April 5 when Action News ran this headline: “Man and woman found shot in Wissinoming.” continue reading »

Right NEast/Wrong NEast: When in doubt, Action News picks a neighborhood at random 4

Sep16

We’d like a little help from our readers on this one.

Tell us how you think Action News decided 8300 Bustleton Avenue — actually in Bells Corner — is in Fox Chase.

When a car crashed into a storefront Sunday, Sept. 11, on that block, Channel 6 rushed to the scene to grab a photo and cover the story. Somewhere en route from Action News’ Main Line headquarters, it was decided the crash happened in Fox Chase. continue reading »

Right NEast/Wrong NEast: Wissinoming store robbery makes second appearance 0

Jul25

This is a first for Right NEast/Wrong NEast: the same story appearing twice.

Last month, both CBS3 and the Police Department got a little lost when a Wissinoming store owner fought off a robber. Though the crime happened on the 6000-block of Torresdale Avenue, both originally reported the crime happened in Torresdale. CBS3 correctly reported the neighborhood in a follow-up story.

But not to be outdone, Action News has gone ahead and made the exact same error — just a few weeks later. In its coverage of the arrest of the man wanted in connection with the robbery, Channel 6 says the crime happened in Torresdale: continue reading »

Right NEast/Wrong NEast: Lawndale and Summerdale different despite similar suffix 3

Mar25

You don’t have to live in Summerdale or Lawndale to know that one is not the other. Lawndale is one-half of Lawncrest; Summerdale is another neighborhood entirely.

It doesn’t take much to spot the difference. All you need is a map and general knowledge of Philadelphia. Cue the error… continue reading »

Right NEast/Wrong NEast: Holmesburg flags invisible to Action News 0

Jan18

Those pesky Upper Holmesburg flags. One minute they’re there, then a TV station comes along and they disappear. That must be what happened when NBC called Holmesburg Frankford in July. And the same thing happened to Action News Monday morning. continue reading »

Right NEast/Wrong NEast: Olney is not in the Northeast 3

Nov30

We’re a little late in correcting this, and we’ve gotta thank the multiple readers who pointed out this blunder.

There’s a lot of discussion on this site and elsewhere about which neighborhoods make up the Northeast. And while there are some points of contention, we all pretty much agree: Olney is not in the Northeast. continue reading »

Right NEast/Wrong NEast: We are literally crying with laughter 1

Let’s cut right to the chase here: Action News got wind of an animal raid at Clark Street and Haldeman Avenue in Bustleton. And told people it happened in Juniata.

Cue the laughter. continue reading »
