The Northwood Civic Association has scheduled a clean-up for the triangle at Adams Avenue and Roosevelt Boulevard. Image/Google Maps
At the Northwood Civic Association meeting on Aug. 21, membership had no opposition to a proposal for a new Popeye’s Chicken at the location of the old beer distributor at 4501 Castor Ave.
Several other issues were addressed, including the need to clean up the triangle at Adams Avenue and Roosevelt Boulevard.

UPDATED June 4 – Police are offering a $20,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of Jalil Cooper, the man wanted in connection with the may 20 murder of Edward Pagan.
Police are investigating a firebombing in Frankford at the same address where a man was killed last month.

The tire slashings in Mayfair aren’t over. After a quiet spell, tires on 10 cars on the 4200-block of Aldine Street were slashed early Monday morning. The slashings began last fall, and thus far, the only arrest has been for what appears to be an isolated incident [CBS3].
Police in the 2nd District are looking for a bank robber who stole cash from the Wells Fargo at 700 block of Adams Ave. Friday. The suspect wore Muslim garb when he handed the teller a threatening note [Philadelphia Police].

Seven tables, 14 city planners and seven maps marked up in blue, red, black and orange filled a Friends Hospital conference room last night.
They were signs of the first of three community planning meetings for the Lower Northeast District – the Philadelphia City Planning Commission’s distinction for Frankford, Northwood, Summerdale, Lawncrest, Oxford Circle and part of Castor Gardens. The district is one of 18 identified by the commission and is next on tap to develop ideas for future planning and zoning opportunities under the comprehensive Philadelphia2035 plan. continue reading »

Friday – Police are investigating the circumstances that led to a Wissinoming man being fatally stabbed inside his home. The 50-year-old was found dead around 11:30 Friday night on the 6200-block of Cottage Street. No further details have been released.

Northeast Detectives is asking for help to identify a suspect police believe is connected with two 2nd District Metro PSC robberies.
The description of the suspect in both late July robberies is similar: a black male roughly 45 to 55 or 50 to 60 years old, about 5’11″ and 230 pounds. He was seen wearing a tan baseball hat and burgundy polo shirt during the first robbery’ and a short-sleeved blue shirt, blue pants, blue Army-style hat and glasses during the second crime. continue reading »

The Frankford Civic Association voted Thursday night to write a letter of opposition to the city’s Zoning Board, asking it to deny a zoning variance for the development of a new facility for the Bridge, a school for boys suffering from drug, alcohol and behavioral issues.
“We’ve been just overwhelmed with drug-related facilities, so we need to say ‘no’ because we’re the closest civic,” said association president Brian Wisniewski, referencing tumult over whether the local Frankford, Northwood or Juniata neighborhood group had the authority to vote on the facility. “At first, the Bridge wanted to go to Juniata but they got together with Northwood to try to bum rush Frankford… We have something to say too.”

The two and a half hour Frankford Civic Association meeting that started 20 minutes late and ended with heated conversation on the controversy of the moment in that beleaguered neighborhood didn’t feature a single vote.
Local opinion of plans for the Bridge, a celebrated, four-decades-old, adolescent residential treatment facility, to develop a campus on a nine-acre plot of nearby land along Adams Avenue, is split between pragmatic support for a known entity and firm opposition for any more recovery programs in the neighborhood. To develop the property, the Bridge will need a variance from the city’s Zoning Board, which can be influenced by neighborhood group opinion.
After spilling into inaction, Barry Howell, president of the Northwood Civic Association, told reporters that on Monday he was going to sign a neighborhood agreement with Bridge representatives.
