One person is dead following two car accidents Saturday night during Hurricane Irene.

The driver involved in a single-vehicle accident escaped without injury yesterday, though the crash resulted in an electrical fire.
When the driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle around 8 a.m.on the 8500-block of Algon Avenue and crashed into a pole, wires fell into the street and caught fire. Police are investigating the crash, but the driver escaped uninjured.

A woman was arrested early yesterday morning in connection with a stabbing in Rhawnhurst.
A 23-year-old male was rushed to the hospital after being stabbed in the stomach in an apartment on the 7800-block of Algon Avenue. continue reading »

A Fels High School student was taken into custody yesterday morning for carrying a knife. Though no injuries were reported, both police and school officials are said to be investigating the matter further.

Police are investigating what they believe is a domestic crime after a shooting in Rhawnhurst this morning left a man dead.
Authorities were called to the 8100-block of Algon Avenue after reports of gunfire in the parking lot of the Meadowview Apartments. Two victims — a male and female — were found in the lot. The man was pronounced dead at the scene, and the woman was rushed to Aria Health-Torresdale with serious injuries.

Escaped convict Oscar Alvarado has been captured as of Monday.
Kamilah Alvarado, 22, Dean Ortiz, 33, and Crysta Otto, 27, of Barnett Street near Erdrick, in Mayfair, face charges for holding up the apprehension of the escaped convict by hiding him inside a Motor Inn in Trevose. Alvarado is accused of murdering a woman in October 2008.

Police are investigating an attack in Pennypack Park yesterday afternoon.
An unidentified woman says she was approached near the 8500- block of Algon Avenue near Krewstown Road by a man who said he was a police officer. She told authorities the man asked her to follow him, then attempted to attack her. The woman then flagged down a real police officer near Bustleton Avenue.
Officers are still investigating the situation, and details of the attack are still unclear.
UPDATED- The attacker is described as a white male in his early 30s, about 5’1’1′ and 200lbs.
He told the woman, who was walking with her baby at the time, that he was a plain clothes officer and needed help finding a lost dog.

Pennsylvania recently released its list of Persistently Dangerous Schools for the 2009-2010 school year, and the top 25 are all in Philadelphia. Of those 25, five are in the Northeast.
A school is defined as persistently dangerous if it meets any of the following criteria for this year and one of the two previous years: at least five dangerous incidents in a school with enrollment of 250 or less; dangerous incidents representing 2 percent of a school’s enrollment for schools with 251 to 1,000 students; 20 or more dangerous incidents in schools with enrollments exceeding 1,000. continue reading »

A summer school student at Northeast High School at Cottman and Algon avenues attacked a school police officer yesterday, sending the officer to the hospital.
A ninth grade student, whose name is being withheld due to age - “mouthed off” to a female officer, School District Spokeswoman Barbara Farley told the Inquire. The student followed orders to leave the building, but returned, and again made undisclosed comments to the female officer.
When a male officer attempted to take the student into custody, the student struck the officer, causing facial injuries. The officer had to be treated in the hospital, but is expected to make a full recovery. The student has been arrested and suspended.
