Much-anticipated updates from the Fox Chase Cancer Center were the focus of last night’s joint meeting of the Fox Chase Homeowners Association and Fox Chase Town Watch groups.

Gary Weyhmuller, senior vice president and chief operating officer of the Cancer Center gave a presentation following to neighborhood residents, providing updates on construction, services and finances. Q: I’ve recently heard that you can use the $8,000 First-time Buyer Tax Credit from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act now and pay them back when your income tax comes back. How true is it?

A: Across the country there are programs in the works to facilitate use of the first-time home-buyers $8,000 tax credit prior to filing your 2010 income tax return. In some states, these programs already exist and are working to improve housing markets. Locally, however, there are many ideas in the preliminary stages but lenders agree most seem as though they will never come to fruition in the next six months before the credit expires. continue reading »

Fox Chase Cancer Center gets $200k grant 0

The Fox Chase Cancer Center received a $217,906 cancer research grant from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act yesterday.

Researchers at the facility will use the funding to examine cancer patients’ common symptoms and determine the best medical approach to them. The goal of the study is to educate caregivers about symptom recognition, treatment and the benefits of intervention when multiple symptoms present themselves.

Q: My fiance and I are getting married this summer so we’re looking to buy a home in the Northeast. We’re not sure exactly which neighborhood we want to live in yet, but it looks like our choices are limited to Mayfair and Homesburg right now. Is there any reason to hope that prices will go down in Morrell Park or Parkwood? We were thinking we should wait until that happens.
