North Wildwood’s Keenan’s Irish Pub reopened Saturday after an 80-suspension.

The bar closed its doors Sept. 3, 2008 after repeated run-ins with New Jersey’s Division of Alcohol Beverage Control. Owner Scott Keenan puts some of the blame on the system.

Keenan’s employees confiscated 175 fake IDs last Memorial Day alone, and Keenan feels the bar is being punished more harshly than his underage patrons.

“We’re trying to send a message out there that we don’t need underage drinkers and we don’t want them,” Jack Keenan, Scott Keenan’s father and co-owner of the bar, told the Daily News.

Part of that message includes sending letters to a handful of the bar’s underage patrons, requesting contact from their legal representatives. Keenan has also contacted the city’s planning board about modifying the bar’s entrances to ensure better surveillance of IDs.

Now that the bar has officially reopened, Keenan is prepping for the upcoming Memorial Day weekend, when he expects up to 3,000 people a night.

Keenan assures he’ll be ready.

We all remember the Golden Nugget ride on Wildwood Boardwalk’s Hunt’s Pier. The three-story coaster opened in the early ’60s and took countless riders on a mining adventure for more than 30 years before it shut down in 1999.

On January 31, 2010, the Golden Nugget will be taken down to make way for a newer, larger coaster.

Jack Morey of Morey’s Piers told the Daily News, “We just couldn’t make it work.”

The cost of restoring the ride proved too much for Morey, who assures the Golden Nugget props will end up in other Morey’s Piers rides or in a museum.

No matter what replaced the Golden Nugget, Wildwood lifers will always associate Hunt’s Pier with their favorite mining ride.

Two of the Northeast’s weekly newspapers, the News Gleaner and the Northeast Breeze, folded on Thursday, along with the Olney Times.

The papers, operated by Yardley’s Journal Register Co., published their final issues on Thursday without prior warning that this week would be their last.

“The suddenness of it was stunning,” Stuart London, former News Gleaner sports editor told the Daily News. “There was no farewell edition or anything on the Web site. We cleaned out our desks and left in two hours.”

The News Gleaner, formerly titled the Frankford News Gleaner, had in been in operation since 1882.

With the News Gleaner and Northeast Breeze dead, the only weekly paper serving our region is the Northeast Times.
