Role reversal: La Salle overtakes Washington for City Title 0

The game gets underway as Washington's freshman kicker (and perhaps future QB) Jake Wright puts his foot to the ball while fellow teammate, Bryant Blair starts downfield on return coverage.

In the first rematch of the Public League vs. the Catholic since 1979, George Washington High School Eagles, with an impressive record of 10-1, defeated the heavily favored La Salle College High School Explorers, 23-14, to claim the AAAA City Championship Title. The big cameras and film crews were noticeably present.

Lest you think you’ve fallen into a time warp I’ll be quick to point out that that was last year. This year it was a role reversal with a different score, and La Salle lay claim to the City Title, defeating Washington, 31-20. continue reading »

“Northeast Rule” takes football playoffs to South Philly 0

Nov3

FootballGrass1_000

The “Northeast Rule,” the nickname given to the unofficial rule that in the past would have allowed the Northeast Vikings to play football playoff games on their home field, has been broken.

Passed last year, a new rule states the Vikings will no longer be allowed to host their own playoff games if opposing coaches feel it provides an advantage. This season, according to an article by Ted Silary, Frankford coach Mike Capriotti asked that the rule be enforced. continue reading »

On the North Catholic side of the field, Sunday, the stands were full of red and white -- the school's colors. Shane Killion, a student at North, seen here with his girlfriend, Sophia Santiago, both of Lawncrest, was wearing his colors, which just also just happen to be the colors of the NL Champion Philadelphia Phillies.

When most people think of North Catholic, they don’t think of Mike Ferris. But among the many memories North students make, you’ll find sports teams – and that’s where Ferris comes in.

A 1982 North graduate and former center for the Falcons football team, 45-year-old Ferris earns his living in the computer field, where he puts his degrees from Peirce and Drexel to work. But in his spare time, Ferris is devoted to running several Web sites dedicated to North Catholic sports.

Ferris grew up on Marlowe Street in Frankford, went to St. Bart’s and still lives in his old neighborhood. He got to relive some of his highschool experiences while his son (class of ’07) attended North, but thanks to his sites, like The Falcon Nest and North Catholic Soccer, Ferris has a permanent connection to North – something that won’t change, even when the school closes its doors for good in May.

The Fels High School football team won its first game of the season Friday, 42-12, against Edison, who had the home field advantage.

Panthers' defensive lineman, senior Quamee Townsend (55), prepares to bring down Edison's Johnathan Mitchell (20). Yes, that tackle was made quite a ways downfield after Mitchell had broken free of half dozen Fels would-be tacklers.
