Fox Chase Reading Series schedule announced, with tribute planned for Louis McKee 1

The Fox Chase Reading series kicked off the winter/spring season with a reading at Ryerss Museum and Library featuring poets Mike Cohen and Anthony Buccino. The series continues until the summer break with a reading each month at Ryerss.

“We are offering a group of diverse poets many who have appeared in magazines nationally and internationally,” said G Emil Reutter, who assists in coordinating the series and contributes to NEast Philly.

Poets Nathalie Anderson and Teresa Leo will appear on February 26th followed by Marie- Elizabeth Mali and Dilruba Ahmed on March 25.

Diane Sahms-Guarnieri the poetry editor of The Fox Chase Review added, “We are celebrating National Poetry Month on April 29 with a special event in memory of Northeast Philadelphia Poet and former Father Judge Teacher Louis McKee.” continue reading »

Fox Chase man among three arrested for fatal Old City beating death 0

Police arrested three suspects over the weekend for the fatal beating death of 23-year-old Kevin Kless. One of the suspects, 20-year-old Steven Ferguson, is from Fox Chase.

Ferguson, of the 1100-block of Solly Avenue, was arrested alongside Felix Crarillo of North Philadelphia and Kenneth Santiago of Juniata for Kless’ Jan. 14 death. continue reading »

Fox Chase Cancer Center will merge resources with Temple University Health System 0

Temple University Health Systems and Fox Chase Cancer Center are joining forces. The two institutions will merge resources, research and aspects of patient care.

Dr. Larry Kaiser, CEO of Temple University Health System, spelled out the details of the deal in a news conference Thursday: “As part of the terms of this agreement, Temple will invest in cancer research at Fox Chase, providing new resources to recruit additional physician scientists.”

Christmas is coming early to Fox Chase. Three celebrations on Dec. 3 will keep the family busy for the day. Events at Ryerss Museum and Library and The Fox Chase Farm run during the day, capped off by the annual Christmas tree lighting at Lions Park in the heart of Fox Chase.

Fox Chase Farm at 8500 Pine Rd. will hold its annual Holiday Green Sale from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wreaths, swags, bows, candle centerpieces, white pine roping and baked goodies will be available to purchase.

Ryerss Museum and Library at 7370 Central Ave. will hold a Victorian Open House/Bazaar from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sponsored by The Friends of Ryerss, the event will include the sale of greens, baked goods, a raffle, dining in the Victorian Tea Room, a black smith demonstration and sales of used books. continue reading »

It’s 7 p.m. on a Friday evening in Fox Chase and the budget is tight. If you’re looking for some inexpensive fun, try the Loudenslager American Legion Post at 7976 Oxford Ave. Why?

Well for two bucks, you get a chance to have a great evening of bingo at the post. The two bucks entitles you to a nine-card sheet (you can also get five sheets for ten bucks).

The canteen is open, selling inexpensive sandwiches, snacks and drinks. An average evening, according to the regulars, is a 12-sheet evening at $24.

It was 9:30 on election night and about 50 people were waiting for Bill Rubin in a bar that smelled like hot wings.

The Sternos were keeping the food hot at the Red Rooster Inn, and sitcoms played on the flatscreen as accommodating bartenders surfed the channels for results. Rubin was trailing with 47 percent of the vote in the 10th Councilmanic District. The Democrat was challenging incumbent Republican Brian O’Neill, who’s represented the district for 32 years. This was the first serious challenge to O’Neill in his three decades at the helm.

“Vote for my dad Bill Rubin,” read the navy and white shirts his son and daughter wore. His wife, parents, brother and sister had similar tops, while his other supporters donned their general pro-Rubin shirts over long sleeves with “push button 227″ on the back. continue reading »

Sally’s Flowers has been a main anchor of the Fox Chase business district since 1977. Located at 7944 Oxford Ave., the shop is known in the community for fine flowers with longevity.

In addition to beautiful flowers, arrangements and green planters, the shop offers an eclectic mix of other items like Ashers chocolate, gourmet cookies and Anthony’s coffee from the Italian Market. The shop carries a large array of flowers that can satisfy anyone’s budget.

The family-operated business is headed up by Sally Dancio and is a model of a community-based business.
