Fernando Torres has more than an aesthetic reason for wanting to improve the look of his Frankford tattoo parlor.

“Cars hit the building a few times,” Torres, who also owns a women’s boutique next door to the parlor, said. “I want to get a steel structure in front to protect it.”

Torres opened Mark My Flesh, his tattoo shop, and Dream Girl’s Fashion, his boutique, about two years ago. On Jan. 21, he was one of six local business owners who participated in a Design Day program sponsored by the Frankford Community Development Corporation’s Main Street Initiative and the Community Design Collaborative. continue reading »

The details of an estimated $25 million, three-year rehabilitation of the Margaret-Orthodox elevated-train SEPTA station began to emerge last night at the first community meeting held by the project management team.

The project, which focuses on bringing the second-to-last eastbound stop into American’s with Disabilities Act compliance, isn’t scheduled to begin until early 2011 and remains in the design phase. The funding for the project has not yet been secured.

“SEPTA means business, but we care about what the community wants and we want to hear from you,” Mauricio Silva, the project manager in charge of engineering, maintenance and construction, said last night inside the meeting room of Frankford Group Ministries, a 20-foot ceiling topped with stained glass keeping a watchful eye.

Around this particular tree: 2nd annual tree lighting ceremony brings the community together 1

With a flick of a switch at last Sunday's holiday ceremony, Santa lit the newly trimmed tree gracing the intersection of Frankford and Cottman.

It’s not a big tree. It’s certainly not as big a tree as you might expect for its intended purpose–to be seen by anyone walking or driving around the intersection of Frankford and Cottman avenues; but it’s not a Charlie Brown Christmas tree, either.

On Sunday Nov. 22, around dusk, folks from Mayfair Business Association and members of the community — young and old alike — strung lights and affixed ornaments on the community’s holiday tree. Santa arrived after darkness had embraced the assembled audience; he flicked a switch, and the tree lit up, a bright star atop, and the people cheered. continue reading »

Historical Society of Frankford celebrates National Historic Trail distinction for Frankford Avenue 1

Nov11

Noted American Revolution historian Dr. Robert Selig highlighted an event last night at the Historical Society of Frankford celebrating this year's designation of the Washington-Rochambeau Revolutionary Route a National Historic Trail.

Ralph D. Nelson almost forgot his tri-cornered hat.

But just before he took the podium, the long, tall, graying Delaware-based historian placed the 18th-century-style cap on his head.

For years, Nelson has been among dozens of Revolutionary War buffs calling for greater acclaim for a 685-mile route along the East Coast that many say helped lead the colonies from fledgling collective to global superpower. See a map here.

Back in March, Nelson got his wish when President Obama signed into law a public management act that made the Washington-Rochambeau Revolutionary Route — nicknamed W3R — a National Historic Trail.

Tuesday night was just gravy.

More than 60 attended an event held last night at the Historical Society of Frankford on Orthodox Street, just blocks from where the W3R trail winds through Northeast Philadelphia, by way of Frankford Avenue. The night was highlighted by a short lecture from noted American Revolution historian Dr. Robert Selig.
