District 172: Breaking down funding during the Perzel era 0

About $10.6 million was funneled directly to the Mayfair Community Development Corp. since 2000, granted from the state Department of Community and Economic Development, according to its website. Much of it went into street cleaning and senior citizen programs.

 

The document states $800,000 was used toward the Devon theater.

 

The same state department gave the Holmesburg Civic Association and the Friends of the Holmesburg Library $5,000 each, according to state records.

Archbishop Ryan High School is proud to announce the results of the 7th Annual Invitational Spelling Bee. Held on Saturday April 2, at Ryan, 76 seventh grade students from 20 grade schools participated. The spelling bee went 17 rounds and equilateral was the winning word. Holme Avenue bridge work expected to finish July 2012 0

About 25 people attended last night’s meeting of the Holme Circle Civic Association, where John Buckley of Buckley Construction gave residents an update about construction on the Holme Avenue bridge.

The PennDOT-funded repairs will make the bridge structurally stable. “In my opinion, it should be closed,” Buckley said of the current state of the bridge.

Instead, traffic patterns will shift over the next year and a half to allow for the bridge to remain open. But as Buckley explains in the video below, homeowners in the stretch of the avenue between the Circle and Longford Street will take the brunt of the traffic and noise. continue reading »

Three priests with connections to St. Jerome Parish in Winchester Park and one former teacher have been charged with various counts of rape, indecent exposure and sexual assault.

District Attorney Seth Williams has charged Fathers Edward Avery, 68, Charles Engelhardt, 64, and James Brennan, 47, and former teacher Bernard Shero, 48, with rape and indecent sexual assault. continue reading »
