The Inquirer launched Student Union 34, an offshoot of Philly.com targeted at and produced by college students, on July 1. The site comprises 34 colleges in and around Philadelphia, with news, features and op-ed pieces from students with the help of some Inquirer editors.

The college education blog from the New York Times introduced the site to its readers, noting 34 has content from all the four-year schools of our region, including “lesser-known schools like Holy Family.” While a few of the bigger universities like Temple and Penn have students generating content, Holy Family University at Grant Avenue and Academy Road, is also on the list.

But that doesn’t mean anyone is representing the college by writing under the Holy Family mantle.

Many of the Northeast communities we recognize today were formulated fairly recently for a city of great age.

Between the end of World War II and the 1970s, the growth of a new, modern architectural style occurred lock and step with the same growth of the Northeast.

And we’re finally getting our due.

Betsy Manning, a Northwood resident and photographer for Temple University’s communications department, has made it a mission of hers to document that style throughout Philadelphia, and much of it is in our Northeast, as Inquirer architecture critic Inga Saffron wrote on Friday.

Right NEast/Wrong NEast: Inqy confuses avenue and street 2

Mar24

By Shannon McDonald

Outside media don’t care about the Northeast. We have all seen them misuse, misspell and mistake our neighborhoods and our streets, so we at NEast mag wanted to do something about it. When they get it wrong, we set it right in a segment we like to call Right NEast/Wrong NEast.

In an article about the death of two local firefighters, Inquirer staff writer Robert Moran listed Loretto Avenue as Loretto Street when mentioning Ladder Company 28 in his report. If only major newspapers had access to the Internet. And if only they took the time to care about the NEast. I don’t see the Inqy confusing Girard Avenue with Girard Street.

Joanna Pacitti of Mayfair has been disqualified from American Idol.

Joanna Pacitti of Mayfair has been disqualified from American Idol.

Joanna Pacitti, a Mayfair resident and America Idol contestant, has been deemed ineligible to continue in the reality show following rumors linking Pacitti with executives at 19 Management, an affiliate of Idol.

The 24-year-old has been quoted as saying the execs are her “best friends” and “helped her get where she is today.” It also believed Pacitti lived with two of the managers in L.A. for several years.

Critics have questioned Pacitti’s involvement with the show, since she has had two previous record deals – no-no for Idol contestants.

Pacitti’s spot in the Top 36 has been taken by Felicia Barton. Reps for Pacitti and 19 Management have not commented.

The unofficial mayor of the Northeast has something to say about Philadelphia’s financial crisis that Michael Nutter announced in November.

Al Taubenberger, the Burholme resident and former Republican mayoral challenger and Northeast Chamber of Commerce president, was asked by city hall reporters what he would do if he overcame the city’s wealth of registered Democrats and was leading Philadelphia through this dark night.
