Right NEast/Wrong NEast: N.J. media group plays it fast and loose 0

A few things raised our eyebrows about the South Jersey Media Group’s report on Philadelphia water main breaks.

First and foremost, why in the world would New Jerseyans care about such things?

An item that ran Wednesday on the company’s website about a Kensington water main break has seemingly no connection to New Jersey. And because we can’t logically expect N.J. media to be aware of Philadelphia neighborhoods, the report says the break on the 3500-block of Stouton Street happened in Northeast Philadelphia. continue reading »

Right NEast/Wrong NEast: Kensington blog references Far Northeast 3

Did you hear about the Far Northeast’s drug and prostitution problem?

Yep, since 2008, photographer Jeffrey Stockbridge has been capturing the drug and prostitution along Kensington Avenue. And while his blog makes for a great read, he’s got the geographer all wrong.

“An elevated train runs the full length of Kensington Avenue, approximately 3 miles into the far North East section of the city.” continue reading »

Right NEast/Wrong NEast: Food co-op sets up shop in the wrong neighborhood 0

The Kensington Community Food Co-op is in Kensington. Its board members all live in Kensington and Fishtown. Its members are all from the Riverwards.

Why then, does the description of the co-op, as first pointed out to us by our partners at Philadelphia Neighborhoods, mention anything about the Northeast?

“Residents in NE Philadelphia are opening a cooperative grocery store.” continue reading »

Right NEast/Wrong NEast: Fox breaks news in the wrong neighborhood 0

Mar26

Mastbaum High School is on Frankford Avenue between Allegheny Avenue and Clearfield Street. That’s not Frankford because it’s well south of the Frankford Creek – the boundary for Northeast Philadelphia.

But Fox29 doesn’t go to Frankford (or Kensington) unless something is wrong, so its reporters aren’t too familiar with the neighborhoods.  continue reading »

Right NEast/Wrong NEast: Police, Daily News can’t find Kensington 0

Mar18

Take  a look at 4625, 6420 and 6855 Frankford Avenue. Do any of those addresses look like Kensington to you?

Didn’t think so. Kensington is about a mile away from the southern-most of the aforementioned addresses. So imagine our smirks when we saw the Daily News run this: continue reading »

Kensington man arrested for Frankford Avenue bank robberies 0

Mar14

Police have arrested a man in connection with robberies at three Northeast banks. 26th District officers arrested Justin O’Brien of the 2100-block of Arizona Street just a few hours after releasing his photo. continue reading »

Right NEast/Wrong NEast: Kensington battle rages on 0

We get it, big media: you think Kensington is in the Northeast. It still isn’t, but we applaud your persistent effort to make it so.

The latest error was called to our attention by a loyal reader. In an interesting and well-written obituary for the late Louis Kripplebauer, the article notes the deceased’s role in the K&A gang. And according to the Inquirer, that gang — and the intersection — are in the Northeast. continue reading »

Right NEast/Wrong NEast: KYW is all over the place 0

We’re not sure where to begin with this one.

A police officer from the 24th District was injured Friday while trying to take two suspects into custody. Fortunately, the officer will be OK. Which allows us now to turn our focus to geographical mess KYW made out of the story. continue reading »

Right NEast/Wrong NEast: Kensington still not in the Northeast 0

Not an uncommon argument around the Northeast, the debate about Kensington goes back and forth. Is it, or is it not, Northeast.

We take the side of most Northeast (and Kensington) residents, and believe it’s not. Most larger media outlets follow this rule, as well. CBS3 does not. continue reading »
