Frankford Avenue methadone clinic in Holmesburg gets approval from Court of Common Pleas 30

The Court of  Common Pleas has ruled in favor of The Healing Way Inc., reversing a decision by Philadelphia’s Zoning Board of Adjustment and reinstating a permit that will allow The Healing Way to operate a methadone clinic on the 7900-block of Frankford in Holmesburg.

“We find this decision to be most disappointing and vow to continue to fight the opening of this clinic,” outgoing Mayfair Civic Association President Joe DeFelice wrote to residents. “We need people to solicit donations to pay for legal fees to further our own appeal.” continue reading »

As Holmesburg, Mayfair and other neighborhoods along the Frankford Avenue business corridor work to keep methadone clinics from opening in their communities, Pa. Rep. Kevin Boyle, D-172nd, held a hearing Wednesday at the Mayfair Community Center to discuss the clinics’ impact on neighborhoods and access to treatment.

The hearing was prompted by the Healing Way Inc’s effort to open a clinic on the 7900-block of Frankford Avenue, and NorthEast Treatment Centers’ plan to set up a clinic at 7520 State Rd.

‍‍Boyle led the panel of speakers, which included community members and representatives of organizations who operate or support methadone treatment facilities. continue reading »

Holmesburg Civic Association President Rich Frizell attended Wednesday’s hearing The Healing Way’s appeal to operate a methadone clinic at 7900 Frankford Ave.

During the city hearing, the state took action, as well. Sen. Mike Stack announced Wednesday a new law to “raise the bar” on methadone treatment. The law calls for a review of overdose deaths related to methadone use. continue reading »

The long-awaited court day over the fate of the methadone clinic at 7900 Frankford Ave. in Holmesburg has arrived.

Wednesday, The Healing Way and the Mayfair and Holmesburg civic associations will be in Common Pleas Court as the clinic operator appeals the decision to prevent the clinic from opening. The Healing Way obtained on over-the-counter permit in 2011 to open the clinic, but the Philadelphia Zoning Board overturned that decision in March following opposition from the community. continue reading »

When the Holmesburg Civic Association convened Nov. 13 for its monthly meeting, the topic at hand was a familiar and controversial one – a proposed methadone clinic at 7520 State Rd.

NorthEast Treatment Centers, which would operate the clinic, needs a zoning variance because the site is currently approved for industrial use. The membership was there to vote on that issue.

HCA President Rich Frizell said he understands there is a drug problem in the area, but said he disagrees with the NET method of treating that problem. continue reading »

BREAKING: Zoning Board overturns application for Holmesburg methadone clinic 11

A summertime rally on Frankford Avenue drew Holmesburg residents opposed to a methadone clinic.

The Zoning Board of Adjustment  has overturned a proposal by Healing Way Inc., the applicant for a methadone facility on Frankford Avenue in Holmesburg. The ruling comes several months after the ZBA first convened following protests from legislators and residents over the summer.

“This extremely important ruling is the culmination of months of work, which has brought local residents together and strengthened our community,” Pa. Rep. Kevin Boyle, D-172nd, said.  ”I have been honored to be a part of that fight and am thrilled about this victory.” continue reading »

Mayfair Town Watch gives it another go under new leadership 0

Mayfair residents will try again to form a town watch.

The group started fresh more than two years ago, shortly after the Mayfair Civic Association assumed new leadership and liquidated all assets the previous membership had accumulated.

But that town watch effort fizzled out after a series of weekly meetings, training sessions and talks of taking on other neighborhoods’ town watch efforts. Determined to try again, Mayfair residents have organized a meeting for Monday, Jan. 9 for the third incarnation in as many years. continue reading »
