Northeast High basketball coach’s death result of drowning 0

The Northeast High community is in mourning after basketball coach Bob DiFlorio died last week. The 57-year-old drowned in Churchville, and was found three days after he went missing, according to a report by the Northeast Times.

Foul play is not suspected, no suicide note was found and toxicology reports are pending. continue reading »

What a difference  a week makes. Last week the Philadelphia Liberty Belles struggled defensively and had a hard time getting their offense going in a 34-20 set back to the New York Sharks. On Saturday night at Northeast High School’s Charlie Martin Memorial Stadium the Liberty Belles(1-1) bounced back in convincing fashion dominating the visiting New England Nightmare (0-2) 52-0. continue reading »

More than 200 students, staff, technology professionals and partners listened to the musical stylings of a high school choir last week. But everyone was there to promote technology literacy.

Held at Northeast High School, the sixth-annual luncheon was again the signature event of the city’s 11th-annual Black Family Technology Awareness Week, which aims to promote digital literacy in nonwhite households to combat the digital divide.

As previously reported on NEast Philly, William Gill, 33, robbed a TD Bank at 3930 Woodhaven Rd. on Jan. 19. Since then, the FBI has figured out more details about Gill, including that he was involved in other crimes such as other bank robberies, stealing a van and stabbing two people. After fleeing the scene of the stabbing, Gill was heard saying that he “Would not be taken alive by cops,” according to authorities.

Despite this claim, reports have said that Gill has been arrested in Fort Lauderdale, Fl., for drug possession under the name of Michael Gill. Gill’s last known residence was at the 5000-block of Homestead Street.

Philadelphia police officer Adrian Makuch, 49, has been charged with prostitution, solicitation, corruption of a minor and for allegedly propositioning a 15-year old boy for sexual contact. Makuch approached an unidentified teen in Northeast Philly in summer 2008 and asked to take naked pictures of the boy in exchange for cash. The boy did not report Makuch until December of that year.

“Northeast Rule” takes football playoffs to South Philly 0

The “Northeast Rule,” the nickname given to the unofficial rule that in the past would have allowed the Northeast Vikings to play football playoff games on their home field, has been broken.

Passed last year, a new rule states the Vikings will no longer be allowed to host their own playoff games if opposing coaches feel it provides an advantage. This season, according to an article by Ted Silary, Frankford coach Mike Capriotti asked that the rule be enforced. continue reading »
