Right NEast/Wrong NEast: NBC puts Olney in the Northeast 0

Seriously, NBC, there is an entire creek designating the Northeast Philly boundary; how hard can this be?

“School bus vs. SEPTA bus in NE Philly,” read the headline on the evening of Jan. 3. There were no other details, just that there had been a crash “along Roosevelt Boulevard in Northeast Philadelphia.” continue reading »

Man sentenced for straw-purchased gun found at Frankford shooting scene 1

Aug9

A 24-year-old man was sentenced to prison Monday for the straw purchase of firearms – the practice of having another person buy the firearm for you.

According to office of Philadelphia District Attorney Seth Williams, Christian Hall conducted five straw purchases in Olney between April and August of 2011. Four remain at large, but one of the guns was recovered from the scene of a Feb. 22, 2012 shooting in Frankford. continue reading »

Northeast Philly reacts: What’s your take on the Affordable Care Act decision? [slideshow] 6

"We’ve gotten out of hand," Fox Chase resident Mike Dowd said of the Affordable Care Act health mandate. "People should take personal responsibility for health care." Photo/G.E. Reutter

The pundits and politicians have had their say over the Supreme Court ruling on Health Care for over a day now. How about the regular folks? I took a walk around the 18 bus loop in Fox Chase today to gauge how people were feeling about the ruling. This was non-scientific and folks were chosen at random but, offered up opinions that seem to reflect the mood nationwide.

“From what I’ve read, I think it’s fine if it keeps me from paying for other people,” Fox Chase resident Nancy Schmidt said.

“The mandate/tax is preposterous,” Tasjae Moore of Fox Chase said. “People should always have a choice.”

And so it went this morning in Fox Chase, where opinions did abound. continue reading »

Right NEast/Wrong NEast: Olney is not in the Northeast 3

Nov30

We’re a little late in correcting this, and we’ve gotta thank the multiple readers who pointed out this blunder.

There’s a lot of discussion on this site and elsewhere about which neighborhoods make up the Northeast. And while there are some points of contention, we all pretty much agree: Olney is not in the Northeast. continue reading »

The Sanctuary Salon's models applaud the work of their hairstylist, Tiffany Bryant.

Hairstylists Tiffany Bryant, Lisa Woodley and Chanta Barrett put the finishing touches on their models’ makeup and hair behind a big curtain last Saturday night right before their models took the stage. Soon thereafter, the youthful participants strutted down the aisles and onto the runway at the second annual Hair Fashion Show.

The event, which was held at 2154 Bridge St. in Frankford, featured three local salons that hoped to demonstrate their professional work and creativity.

Lisa Woodley, a third-generation hairstylist and owner of North Philadelphia’s LSW Hair Designs, enjoyed participating in this year’s show. Woodley expected the event to have a positive impact on business.

“It’s a great opportunity for the community to come out and see a salon showcase their work,” Woodley said. “This will help us get more clients.” continue reading »

neast-parenttrap3

It was July 4th and the street was quiet – too quiet. It’s been four years since we left our little home in Lawncrest, and we are still not used to the serenity of the Far Northeast, after living just a couple of blocks away from Independence Day central for Northeast Philadelphia. continue reading »
