Frankford gardeners came together Saturday to raise money for Overington Park events by selling perennials from neighborhood gardens.
The park at 4600 Leiper St. now has freshly planted annuals, Tropical Cannas and sunflower seeds, and many Frankford residents went home with flowers they purchased from neighbors. continue reading »

Saturday was community cleanup day in Frankford, and the Frankford Gazette checked out three cleanup locations for the event.
Residents were hard at work cleaning up the former Smedley School, Wilmot Park and the 4900-block of Penn Street, all of which you can get a glimpse of on the Gazette’s site.

Dozens of volunteers helped spruce up three Frankford parks over the weekend for Philly Spring Cleanup. The Friends of Overington Park and Frankford CDC led the efforts, with help from Councilwoman Maria Quinones-Sanchez and State Rep. Tony Payton.
The Frankford Gazette has recaps of both events, which included cleaning and planting in Overington and Wilmot parks and the small park at Hedge and Orthodox streets.

Northeast native and 2005 grad of the Philadelphia High School for Creative and Performing Arts Peter Sabasino is currently a contestant on the FOX TV hit show So You Think You Can Dance. Sabasino’s primary style is tap, though he’s trained in modern, jazz, hip-hop and other styles.

The 2009 Frankford Festival was this weekend – a nice treat after having been rained out the weekend before.
Held at Overington Park at Leiper and Overington streets, the festival featured live music, a petting zoo, a moon bounce and perhaps most anticipated: the Northeast Philly Idol contestants.

A police officer is being investigated after being seen assaulting a woman on a store surveillance camera. Officer Alberto Lopez Sr. is pictured approaching and provoking a physical confrontation with Agnes Lawless around 3 a.m. last August. Lawless and her friends had just been in a fender bender with Lopez’s son. The incident took place at a Lukoil store at Comly Road and Roosevelt Boulevard, not far from the scene of the car accident near Northeast Philadelphia Airport. The situation is a complicated one, which Internal Affairs is investigating. Lopez has since been removed from active duty while incident is further evaluated.
