Right NEast/Wrong NEast: St. Dom’s is back in Frankford 0

Dec2

This one brings us back.

For those of you who’ve been reading NEast Philly since it’s infancy, we started Right NEast/Wrong NEast back in February 2009 — about a year after we launched the site. And our very first RNWN was about a WHYY blog post that reported St. Dominic Parish as being in Frankford. Even though there are Upper Holmesburg neighborhood flags waving proudly in front of the school.

Never one for geographic accuracy, the Inquirer last week made the exact same mistake: continue reading »

Right NEast/Wrong NEast: We’d never call for the closing of a newspaper, but this might push over the edge 9

Sep27

UPDATE (Sept. 27 12:10 p.m.) — The error has been fixed, but not noted. We’re told by a staffer the mistake ran early this morning online, but was corrected before going to print.

And then the Philadelphia Inquirer called Frankford Avenue “Frankfort.”

We’ll leave it at that. continue reading »

Right NEast/Wrong NEast: Tacony now going by Frankford and Port Richmond 3

Philly.com is the home of the Philadelphia Inquirer and the Philadelphia Daily News — the city’s only two “city-wide” papers.

Neither paper knows where Tacony is. Last we checked, Tacony is part of Philadelphia, and shouldn’t be something our papers of record confuse with other neighborhoods.

But over the weekend, Tacony was called Port Richmond and Frankford by the Inquirer and Daily News, respectively. continue reading »

Right NEast/Wrong NEast: Kensington battle rages on 1

We get it, big media: you think Kensington is in the Northeast. It still isn’t, but we applaud your persistent effort to make it so.

The latest error was called to our attention by a loyal reader. In an interesting and well-written obituary for the late Louis Kripplebauer, the article notes the deceased’s role in the K&A gang. And according to the Inquirer, that gang — and the intersection — are in the Northeast. continue reading »

It started about a month ago. Or seven months ago, depending on where you think the story really begins.

It was hyped for months: Tony Danza would be teaching at a high school in Philadelphia for his new reality show. And then we come to find out, he’d be spending the semester at Northeast High. Even those who aren’t Danza fans, who didn’t spend their childhoods watching him on the small screen, were excited that something big, something of national interest, would be happening in the Northeast. continue reading »

Commentary: Where is Little Puerto Rico? 0

As I was wading through news stories not too long ago to find mentions of the Northeast, I came across an Inquirer story about people illegally riding all-terrain vehicles.

In it, one person mentions he rides his ATV from his neighborhood to Little Puerto Rico, which, the Inquirer writer reported, is in the Northeast.

Many neighborhoods in the Northeast have blocks -  or even whole pockets of – Hispanic residents, but is there an area that can be called Little Puerto Rico? Based on previous stories from the Inquirer, like this one featured in Right NEast/Wrong NEast, writers for the paper go by the rule that Feltonville is in the Northeast. Or was the writer referring to Kensington, which the paper has also called Northeast before?

So the questions remains: where is Little Puerto Rico? Is there a small pocket of a neighborhood that’s being overlooked, or is it really in Feltonville or Kensington, and not in the Northeast at all?

Right NEast/Wrong NEast: Yet another street/avenue mix up 0

Outside media don’t care about the Northeast. We have all seen them misuse, misspell and mistake our neighborhoods and our streets, so we at NEast Philly wanted to do something about it. When they get it wrong, we set it right in a segment we like to call Right NEast/Wrong NEast.

These are getting a little old. In his report yesterday about a double-shooting at Levick and Sylvester streets, Inquirer reporter Robert Moran wrote that the shooting took place on Sylvester Avenue.

This is the fifth instance – and the second offense from the Inquirer -  in which a news outlet made such a mistake. We get that breaking a story is important, but getting the street right is one of the simplest parts of reporting a story – and it’s easy enough for an editor to check.

It’s the little things that matter.

Right NEast/Wrong NEast: where does Bridesburg belong, anyway? 0

This could cause some arguments, but Bridesburg is not in the Northeast. Some will tell you the Frankford Creek is the dividing line of the Northeast, others say Bridge Street, other still, extend our borders even farther. continue reading »
