For the most part, I get by as a New Jersey resident without Northeast nostalgia making me too homesick. However, that all changes once baseball season starts going.
I’m a big Phillies fan, and living up in Mets/Yankees region isn’t simple. I get dirty looks whenever I wear my Roy Halladay shirt or when co-workers pass my cubicle and see my Phillies posters hanging up.
Making it worse, I have to pay extra money to watch or listen to a Phillies game up there (via an MLB TV package or something similar) and feel like I can barely appreciate the team for which I profess to be a “die-hard fan.” That doesn’t seem very die-hard to me.

During the tense six-game World Series, many residents of Northeast Philadelphia want to show their Phillies pride, but still have enough money to pay the bills. Bargain shoppers found that the several Forman Mills stores in the area have Phillies championship merchandise at lower prices. They have some very similar items found in other stores, like the Modell’s in Roosevelt Mall.
See video of some of the Northeast’s most popular sports retailers and their customers below. continue reading »

Padraic Glackin and his Yankees-loving girlfriend
A Bustleton native is coming back home to watch from his hometown the Phillies play in their second straight World Series, but he’s not bringing his long-time girlfriend. Because, well, she’s a Yankees fan.
Padraic Glackin lives New York City now, attending graduate school at Fordham University in the Bronx borough, and has a serious five-year relationship with Manhattan native Bridget Sweeney.
“This is the first time where it’s been an issue,” Glackin, 24, says of their competing passions in baseball’s best-of-seven championship series, which kicks off tonight in New York. “We were out walking before game six [that sent the Yankees to the World Series] was even played, and a Yankees fan said something, and I told him to make it to the World Series first, and [Bridget] gave me a dirty look.”

An early morning car accident turned into an assault on Frankford Avenue in Mayfair.
Police say a 20-year-old man lost control of his vehicle on the 7500-block of Frankford Avenue around 1:30 this morning, and crashed onto the sidewalk. He was then pulled out of the vehicle by an unidentified person and was assaulted, sustaining injuries to his head.
The crash and assault are still being investigated. No word on whether either is related to the Phillies Celebration at Cottman and Frankford.

Thousands of Phillies fans crowded the intersection of Cottman and Frankford avenues after the team clinched a spot in the 2009 World Series.
The crowd began brewing moments after the game ended before midnight Wednesday night and grew to a mass covering the entire intersection and spilling into the rest of Mayfair not long after. Below see exclusive NEast Philly video of the melee.

Worth the read
Vandals broke into police property twice this week, causing $20,000 in damage. The vandals targeted the Blue Flames field house, the home of the police and firefighters’ sports teams, pouring bleach and lighter fluid on the uniforms, and leaving graffiti behind. Authorities said the vandals entered by breaking a hole into the roof.
The Cottman-Frankford hub in Mayfair is among the three intersections that will see beefed-up security as the Phillies advance into the playoffs, and possibly (hopefully) the World Series. The other two intersections, which are part of the department’s zero tolerance approach to out-of-hand celebrations, are Broad and Snyder in South Philly and Broad and Walnut in Center City.
A small police museum will take form over the next month, to be displayed in the lobby of Police Headquarters at Eighth and Race streets. The main feature will be a 42-inch touchscreen featuring photos and videos, in addition to digital photographs, new display cases and a Web site. The museum will be open for tours.

The staff at Country Club Diner supports the Phillies. Photo by Jason Achuff.
At the behest of manager Melody Eagan (center, top row) the staff of Country Club Diner, at 1717 Cottman Ave., is wearing red tops, or Phillies caps and T-shirts on days the Phillies play.
When the Eagles play the staff wears green or Eagles gear, unless the Phillies are in the playoffs. This photo was taken earlier today in honor of the Phillies’ fourth game in the NLDS in Colorado against the Rockies. The full staff was working Sunday when there was a sea of red but today, some had shirts in the wash.
The 53- year-old Country Club Diner serves breakfast, lunch and dinner (with takeout) from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. throughout the year, closed only on Christmas Day. The bakery is famous for its cheesecake and Jewish apple cake.
