The Washington Eagles faced off against the Father Judge Crusaders Thursday night to fight for the title of city champs. Washington beat Bartram in the Public League, and Judge beat Ryan in the Catholic League, before the two came together last week for the city title. On Friday, Oct. 30,  3rd Federal Bank, which already has a branch at Woodhaven, unveiled its plans for a new branch in the same center at Woodhaven and Knights roads. There was a ceremonial groundbreaking attended by the bank’s board of directors, the building contractors, Mayor Michael Nutter and several members of his staff, and members of the community. Bank president and CEO Kent Lufkin spoke and announced Mayor Nutter, who also spoke before the two gentlemen did a ceremonial dirt dig and toss, twice, to accommodate the photographers. continue reading »

In what by game’s end had become a chilly Monday night at Charles Martin Memorial Stadium, by a score of 2-0, Washington defeated Bartram to clinch the 2009 Class AAA Public League Boys Soccer Championship. Washington will play the winner of Tuesday night’s matchup between Archbishop Ryan and Father Judge determining the 2009 Catholic League Boys Champions. The Public League and the Catholic League Champions will vie for the City Championship. continue reading »

Northeast High football players and fans were in for a special treat over the weekend — Tony Danza came out to cheer on the Vikings in their game against the Washington Eagles. Danza, who is currently teaching at Northeast while filming his A&E reality show Teach, showed his support for the team and spent some time chatting with the principal. Linda Carroll.

Ryan vs. Judge

The persistent rain couldn't dampen the enthusiasm of Ryan fans, who cheered on their team to the very end.

The persistent rain couldn't dampen the enthusiasm of Ryan fans, who cheered on their team to the very end, despite the 38-6 loss to Judge.

Near the end of the game,  running back/wide receiver Brian Murphy (1)  broke free, and with Tim Kane (24)  as his wingman, ran more than 40 yards to score a touchdown. It was Judge defensive back John Donohoe's (11) attempt of a diving tackle at the 3-yard line that sent Murphy catapulting into the end zone.

Lincoln vs. Central

Lincoln's Joe McCausland breaks into the open on a run while keeping his eyes open for potential receivers. He's aided in his escape from the backfield by lineman Mike Page (79), and running back Chris Williams (33), who took on Central defenders Richard Drayton (83) and Saleem Rivers (53).

He's aided in his escape from the backfield by lineman Mike Page (79), and running back Chris Williams (33), who took on Central defenders Richard Drayton (83) and Saleem Rivers (53).

The Railsplitters' Omar Black (9) streaks half the length of the field to score a touchdown. John Gelin (32) provided a key block on Central's Zaim Tahiraj (23) at the beginning of Black's previous return. Black also plays defense for the Railsplitters. 

Receiving a key block by teammate Jon Gelin (32) (upper right), Lincoln's dependable running back/defensive back, Omar Black (9) was able to return a kickoff for 20-30 yards. A couple plays later Black would "finish the job" and score a TD off a 50 yard run.
