Right NEast/Wrong NEast: Port Richmond returns to the Northeast 0

Nov11

Ah, Port Richmond, how we’ve missed you.

It was July 1, 2010 the last time a publication confused Port Richmond and the Northeast. Until Fox broke the streak and slipped up Nov. 5.

That’s when the report of a prostitution raid at a strip club came out — at the Penthouse Club on Castor Avenue near Delaware Avenue. continue reading »

Two men  – one from Olney, one from Port Richmond — face charges for the Friday night incident that resulted in an 8th District officer getting struck and dragged by a car.

Mark Kelly, 38, of the 5900-block of B Street and William Gray, 38, of the 3200-block of Mercer Street were arrested Friday on the 4100-block of Carteret Street, and have been charged with robbery, theft, aggravated assault, simple assault, kidnapping, impersonating a police officer, burglary and criminal conspiracy. continue reading »

Right NEast/Wrong NEast: Tacony now going by Frankford and Port Richmond 3

Philly.com is the home of the Philadelphia Inquirer and the Philadelphia Daily News — the city’s only two “city-wide” papers.

Neither paper knows where Tacony is. Last we checked, Tacony is part of Philadelphia, and shouldn’t be something our papers of record confuse with other neighborhoods.

But over the weekend, Tacony was called Port Richmond and Frankford by the Inquirer and Daily News, respectively. continue reading »

Right NEast/Wrong NEast: WHYY needs a geography lesson 1

WHYY is starting its own hyperlocal web publication. For the Northwest. But they could still use a little help with the Northeast geography.

Because Port Richmond is definitely not Northeast — note the 19134 zip code and the south-of-the-Frankford-Creek-location. continue reading »

Right NEast/Wrong NEast: KYW is all over the place 1

We’re not sure where to begin with this one.

A police officer from the 24th District was injured Friday while trying to take two suspects into custody. Fortunately, the officer will be OK. Which allows us now to turn our focus to geographical mess KYW made out of the story. continue reading »

Right NEast/Wrong NEast: Northeast car accident happend in four different spots 3

Jun30

Outside media don’t care about the Northeast. We have all seen them misuse, misspell and mistake our neighborhoods and our streets, so we at NEast mag wanted to do something about it. When they get it wrong, we set it right in a segment we like to call Right NEast/Wrong NEast.

The city’s larger media outlets could not agree this weekend when a speeding driver injured two police officers early Sunday morning.

The accident happened around 1 a.m. on the 4200-block of Aramingo Avenue. That’s about all the reporters can agree on. continue reading »

In a story yesterday about a memorial ceremony held for slain police officer Sgt. Stephen Liczbinski, CBS3 labeled the event as being in Northeast Philadelphia.

Last we check, the intersection of Almond and Schilller streets is in Port Richmond, which is not NEast.

Right NEast/Wrong NEast: Torresdale Ave. is not in Port Richmond 1

Those MURL kids are at it again. A  post on Temple University’s senior journalism class blog places Abby Auto of Frankford in Port Richmond. The lede of the post reads,

Mohammed Alkurid, 47, was sitting in his office at Abby Auto Shop, located at 4608 Torresdale Ave. in Port Richmond on Sunday afternoon when he heard a loud bang.

The address given in the post is at Torresdale and Orthodox, unarguably in Frankford. Torresdale turns into Erie at Kensington Ave., and veers slightly west, in the opposite direction of Port Richmond.

Geographical error aside, author Lydie Miller wrote a great story. But more importantly, how did MURL’s Port Richmond team end up in the farthest reaches of Frankford?
