The area of Pennypack Park near the concert state will be spray for mosquitoes Thursday night.
Weather permitting, the city’s Department of Public Health will apply mosquito-control treatments tonight to parts of Pennypack Park.
The targeted area gets a lot of use — the stage area where the park holds its Summer Concert Series. Spraying will begin this evening in the park between Rhawn Street, Welsh Road, Cresco Avenue and Pennypack Creek, and that part of the park will closed then.
The department’s Vector Control staff will apply an aerosol mist that kills mosquitoes on contact, helping to prevent the spread of West Nile Virus. Anvil 10 + 10, a synthetic pyrethroid, has no residual effects and no ill effects on humans, according to the Department of Public Health. continue reading »

Two of the three candidates for the 6th District City Council seat went to last night’s Holmesburg Civic Association meeting to address neighborhood and district-wide concerns and answer questions from residents.
Republican candidate Sandy Stewart and Democratic candidate Marty Bednarek each addressed the members before taking turns answering questions. Democratic candidate Bobby Henon was not in attendance.
DROP was a hot topic, but a question about term limits drew the most discussion from the roughly 20 people at the meeting. continue reading »

There’s a lot that goes into reporting a nuisance property in the City of Philadelphia, and a lot of things that can come from it. Assistant District Attorney Andrew Carobus reviewed the process at last night’s Holmesburg Civic Association meeting.
Carobus is part of the office’s Public Nuisance Task Force, with handles the acquisition and auction of problem properties.
“We can’t promise you something will be done overnight,” he explained to the more than 30 people at the meeting. But, he said, the more detailed a report on a property is, and the more often neighbors call, the better the memo the DA’s office can create to help address the problem. continue reading »

Three men have been arrested in connection with overnight robberies at three Wawas in the area.
Around 1:15 this morning, a man with a gun entered the Wawa at Rhawn Street and Roosevelt Boulevard in Rhawnhurst demanding money. Just minutes later, the Castor Gardens Wawa on the 6400-block of Bustleton Avenue by a man who took off in a car with four other people. continue reading »

The driver of a motorcycle died yesterday as a result of a collision in Fox Chase.
Reports said the motorcycle collided with a pickup truck on Rhawn Street near Ripley Street around 8:30 a.m. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. It’s unclear if the driver of the pickup was injured.
The cause of the crash is still being investigated.

Nearly 40 people were on hand for last night’s meeting of the Fox Chase Homeowners Association and Town Watch meeting, and residents brought their lists of neighborhood concerns.
601 Rhawn St. The home at 601 Rhawn St. next to St. Cecilia’s Church has been for sale, and Councilman Brian O’Neill was at last night’s meeting to address rumors of what the buyers plan for their new home. O’Neill’s office has received letters stating the new owners have plans to convert the home to a Buddhist temple. Though O’Neill said he’s unsure of the owners’ intentions, he assured neighbors the property is not zoned for such use. continue reading »

The 8th District Police successfully held its first Police Service Area meetings for all three zones Wednesday.
Approximately 25 members who live in PSA zone 1 met with Lt. Mullin at Cottage Green. The goal of the PSAs is to create a localized forum for residents to discuss issues in their immediate neighborhood, and to create a coordinated response to crime as a result of this partnership between the police and the community. continue reading »
