Right NEast/Wrong NEast: Kensington battle rages on 1

We get it, big media: you think Kensington is in the Northeast. It still isn’t, but we applaud your persistent effort to make it so.

The latest error was called to our attention by a loyal reader. In an interesting and well-written obituary for the late Louis Kripplebauer, the article notes the deceased’s role in the K&A gang. And according to the Inquirer, that gang — and the intersection — are in the Northeast. continue reading »

Right NEast/Wrong NEast: KYW is all over the place 1

We’re not sure where to begin with this one.

A police officer from the 24th District was injured Friday while trying to take two suspects into custody. Fortunately, the officer will be OK. Which allows us now to turn our focus to geographical mess KYW made out of the story. continue reading »

Right NEast/Wrong NEast: Streets and neighborhoods are different 0

We don’t see too many of these, but when they come up, our editors can practically feel Northeast residents collectively slapping their foreheads in frustration.

In a story about a car accident that resulted in the death of a teenager Sunday, FOX29 made the simplest — and biggest — of our Right NEast/Wrong NEast mistakes: the reporter confused a neighborhood with a street. In other words, the writer assumed that because the car accident took place on Torresdale Avenue, that it also happened in the Torresdale neighborhood.

Except the accident occurred in Frankford. Not only is that an entirely different neighborhood, but it’s on pretty much the opposite side of the region as Torresdale. Frankford is the southern-most neighborhood in the Northeast, while Torresdale runs straight into the Bucks County border.

Thanks for taking the time to cover this, FOX, even if the most basic aspect of the story is inaccurate.

Outside media don’t care about the Northeast. We have all seen them misuse, misspell and mistake our neighborhoods and our streets, so we at NEast Philly wanted to do something about it. When they get it wrong, we set it right in a segment we like to call Right NEast/Wrong NEast.

Right NEast/Wrong NEast: Fairhill strike two 1

Let us preface this by saying how great NEast Philly’s relationship with MURL is. For the past two semesters, we’ve had a total of six students from Temple University’s Multimedia Urban Reporting Lab working with us, exploring the region, and helping us cover the Northeast.

And while we love the idea of sending student journalists out to unfamiliar neighborhoods, this is the second time said students have included Fairhill in the Northeast. (Other infractions have included Fishtown and Port Richmond). continue reading »

Right NEast/Wrong NEast: The Wiss/Frankford border is fine, but definite 8

This one is a throwback, with the original article dating all the way back to Dec. 15, 2009. But the breaking news comes first, so we held this off for a rainy day. . .

The Wissinoming/Frankford border is argued a lot among residents of both neighborhoods. Some say Cheltenham Avenue is the boundary, while others push it down to Bridge Street.

Regardless, the school bus accident that happened at Pratt and Valley streets last month was in Frankford. Not in Wissinoming, as Action News reported. Might seem like a small matter, but one block can make a difference. continue reading »

Right NEast/Wrong NEast: East vs. West makes all the difference 0

This is a first. We’ve called the big media outlets out on a lot of things, but we never expected to see such an obvious error.

In a report yesterday on Action News, a fire on the 6700-block of North 17th Street got a Northeast Philly dateline. We didn’t even need to read the full story to figure out it was wrong; the street name (or number) clued us in. continue reading »

Right NEast/Wrong NEast: Another Feltonville mixup 0

We already know the mainstream media thinks Feltonville is in the Northeast. And we’ve always argued it isn’t. After much discussion with readers on our Facebook page, we can conclusively say that Feltonville is not part of the NEast.

Some measure our boundaries by the Frankford Creek, with everything north of it being part of the Northeast. We make it even simpler. The following zip codes are considered to be part of the Northeast: 19154, 19152, 19149, 19136, 19135, 19124, 19116, 19115, 19114, 19111. continue reading »

Right NEast/Wrong NEast: confirmation that Action News doesn’t read NEast Philly 3

Back in October, we featured a Right NEast/Wrong NEast calling out Action News for misreporting a neighborhood. The break, which happened on the 2800-block of Willits Road near Holme Circle, reportedly happened in Torresdale.

Though Right NEast/Wrong NEast is a popular feature on NEast Philly, we don’t pretend the big news outlets read every word we write. As if we needed confirmation of that, Action News has made the error once again. continue reading »

Right NEast/Wrong NEast: Tacholmesfair? 5

It’s one of the most recent high-profile news stories around the city: a 50-year-old blind woman beaten and raped inside her own home.

The story is a sensitive and shocking one, made all the more difficult to read when you consider its inaccuracies.

Similar to October’s rape attempt in Holme Circle, the larger media outlets in the city can’t agree on which neighborhood the brutal attack took place in. continue reading »

Right NEast/Wrong NEast: Action News mistakes Holmesburg for Mayfair 3

As NEast Philly has reported, a 22-year-old male was fatally shot Sunday in Holmesburg.

But Action News reporters must have lost their maps when compiling their report, because they listed the 7900-block of Craig Street as Mayfair. continue reading »
