Right NEast/Wrong NEast: Help Desk could use help finding Holme Circle 0

Jul14

Holmeburg, Holme Circle and Burholme are all derivatives of some sort of the Holme family of Philadelphia. They’re all also different neighborhoods in the Northeast, which has proven a difficult fact for Philadelphia’s larger media outlets to navigate around.

So when the Daily News picked up on the Holme Avenue Bridge closure story this week, it wasn’t too surprising when the neighborhood was called Holmesburg. Not a very helpful report from the Help Desk.

Right NEast/Wrong NEast: Lawncrest still confusing people 0

Jul12

Maybe it’s because Lawncrest is really two separate neighborhoods. Or maybe it’s because our local TV news reporters have never actually been to Lawncrest (except when there were some dog fighting arrests).

Whatever the case, the Lawncrest, Summerdale and Oxford Circle neighborhoods seem to present a real problem for Philadelphia’s mainstream media — geography-wise, that is. continue reading »

Right NEast/Wrong NEast: Wissinoming gets overlooked again 0

Jul11

Poor Wissinoming. When it’s not getting mistaken for Frankford, it may as well not even exist to the mainstream media.

When a store owner in Wissinoming fought off an armed robber last week, the media swept in with the cameras. They just weren’t sure where exactly they were sweeping in. continue reading »

Right NEast/Wrong NEast: Frankford and Cottman relocates to Holmesburg 0

Jun29

If Frankford and Cottman up and changed neighborhoods, we didn’t get the memo.

Though Cottman Avenue is often considered the unofficial border of Mayfair and Holmesburg, “Frankford and Cottman” is pretty much known as the heart of Mayfair.

And though the mainstream media have a tough time finding their way about the Northeast, they can at least make it to Frankford and Cottman for the expected “it’s crazy out here” report during sports championships celebrations. continue reading »

Right NEast/Wrong NEast: Fox’s mistake does not a winner make 4

Jun28

If you bought a lottery ticket recently at a Frankford food market, you may have won $225,000. At least, according to Fox29.

Don’t get your hopes up, Frankford shoppers, because the ticket was purchased on Frankford Avenue in Holmesburg. continue reading »

Right NEast/Wrong NEast: Media outlets’ maps missing Cottman and Tyson avenues 0

What’s wrong with this description: “K-mart on Roosevelt Boulevard near Welsh Road”?

It’s how the Philadelphia Inquirer and Action News described a K-mart where a man robbed the jewelry counter with his daughter in tow. Except, there’s no K-mart on the Boulevard near Welsh Road. continue reading »

Right NEast/Wrong NEast: Northeast is now hip and part of Riverwards 1

Apr6

Ask any Philadelphia newcomer living in Fishtown, Port Richmond or Kensington where they live and they’re likely to tell you the Northeast. That misconception has now been extended beyond those boundaries, into the widest reaches of Northern Liberties.

Kudos to NEast Philly reader John Gormely for pointing out this laughable mistake from the Inquirer: continue reading »

Right NEast/Wrong NEast: Lawndale and Summerdale different despite similar suffix 3

Mar25

You don’t have to live in Summerdale or Lawndale to know that one is not the other. Lawndale is one-half of Lawncrest; Summerdale is another neighborhood entirely.

It doesn’t take much to spot the difference. All you need is a map and general knowledge of Philadelphia. Cue the error… continue reading »

Right NEast/Wrong NEast: Police, Daily News can’t find Kensington 0

Mar18

Take  a look at 4625, 6420 and 6855 Frankford Avenue. Do any of those addresses look like Kensington to you?

Didn’t think so. Kensington is about a mile away from the southern-most of the aforementioned addresses. So imagine our smirks when we saw the Daily News run this: continue reading »

Right NEast/Wrong NEast: Holmesburg flags invisible to Action News 0

Jan18

Those pesky Upper Holmesburg flags. One minute they’re there, then a TV station comes along and they disappear. That must be what happened when NBC called Holmesburg Frankford in July. And the same thing happened to Action News Monday morning. continue reading »
