Right NEast/Wrong NEast: Frankford’s ‘boom’ expands beyond the neighborhood 0

Sep1

Frankford will boom soon, according to some.

Among them are State Rep. Tony Payton and Mark Tucker of Tucker Development Plus. They spoke with the Philadelphia Business Journal about the neighborhood’s changes and what could be next for Frankford.

“The Frankford Arsenal employed more than 22,000 people,” reads a line from the PBJ about the neighborhood’s history. The arsenal can’t really be credited for Frankford’s heyday, blamed for its struggles or held as a symbol for its bright future, though. continue reading »

Right NEast/Wrong NEast: Tacony moves to Mayfair and joins North Philadelphia 0

Aug25

Let’s get right to the point: Finding the Mayfair, Tacony and Holmesburg borders is no easy feat, even for the people who live there.

The three neighborhoods’ civic associations and town watch groups work pretty closely together, and the Mayfair Business Association’s boundaries stretch beyond the neighborhood.

So we could maybe look past the fact that a fire in Tacony was reported as Mayfair by CBS3. But the North Philadelphia headline is unacceptable. continue reading »

Right NEast/Wrong NEast: Castor Gardens may be hard to find, but it’s not in Lawncrest 0

Aug23

It’s rare a mainstream news outlet can find Castor Gardens. Summerdale, Oxford Circle and Lawncrest often get the Castor Gardens label. Or simply, ‘Castor,’ whatever that’s supposed to mean.

When a body was found inside a car on the 800-block of Unruh Avenue, Philadelphia’s mainstream media rushed to report on it. Most came out without embarrassment. continue reading »

Right NEast/Wrong NEast: the Daily News thinks the Northeast is pretty small 0

Aug22

Two men are arrested for running a fencing operation.

One lives at Pearson and Cottage. One lives at Magee and Jackson. The items they stole were recovered at Torresdale and Longshore.

The first address is in Torresdale; the others are in Tacony.

But when Ryan Shantz and Michael Mager were arrested, the Daily News took to its blog and reported the following: continue reading »

Right NEast/Wrong NEast: Wissinoming store robbery makes second appearance 0

Jul25

This is a first for Right NEast/Wrong NEast: the same story appearing twice.

Last month, both CBS3 and the Police Department got a little lost when a Wissinoming store owner fought off a robber. Though the crime happened on the 6000-block of Torresdale Avenue, both originally reported the crime happened in Torresdale. CBS3 correctly reported the neighborhood in a follow-up story.

But not to be outdone, Action News has gone ahead and made the exact same error — just a few weeks later. In its coverage of the arrest of the man wanted in connection with the robbery, Channel 6 says the crime happened in Torresdale: continue reading »

Right NEast/Wrong NEast: Tacony gets credit for Wissinoming animal hoarding 0

Jul18

CBS3 corrected itself last week when a Wissinoming store owner fended off a robber. First reporting the location at Tacony, the station later used the correct location of Wissinoming.

Someone at Action News is slow on the uptake, because in Channel 6 land, there is no Wissinoming. When the PSPCA found more than three dozen cats in a home on the 6200-block of Walker Street (south of Robbins Street), Action News told readers the animals were removed from a home in Tacony: continue reading »

Right NEast/Wrong NEast: Lawncrest is a lesson not learned 0

Jul15

Two Lawncrest RNWN features in one week. Clearly the folks in front of the TV cameras haven’t been reading.

Just like there wasn’t a shooting last Thursday in Lawncrest, no one there died from the heat Tuesday. Early reports of a death on the 900-block of Carver Street indicate heat may have been a factor. continue reading »

Right NEast/Wrong NEast: Help Desk could use help finding Holme Circle 0

Jul14

Holmeburg, Holme Circle and Burholme are all derivatives of some sort of the Holme family of Philadelphia. They’re all also different neighborhoods in the Northeast, which has proven a difficult fact for Philadelphia’s larger media outlets to navigate around.

So when the Daily News picked up on the Holme Avenue Bridge closure story this week, it wasn’t too surprising when the neighborhood was called Holmesburg. Not a very helpful report from the Help Desk.

Right NEast/Wrong NEast: Lawncrest still confusing people 0

Jul12

Maybe it’s because Lawncrest is really two separate neighborhoods. Or maybe it’s because our local TV news reporters have never actually been to Lawncrest (except when there were some dog fighting arrests).

Whatever the case, the Lawncrest, Summerdale and Oxford Circle neighborhoods seem to present a real problem for Philadelphia’s mainstream media — geography-wise, that is. continue reading »

Right NEast/Wrong NEast: Wissinoming gets overlooked again 0

Jul11

Poor Wissinoming. When it’s not getting mistaken for Frankford, it may as well not even exist to the mainstream media.

When a store owner in Wissinoming fought off an armed robber last week, the media swept in with the cameras. They just weren’t sure where exactly they were sweeping in. continue reading »
