Friday – Police are investigating the circumstances that led to a Wissinoming man being fatally stabbed inside his home. The 50-year-old was found dead around 11:30 Friday night on the 6200-block of Cottage Street. No further details have been released.

The fourth annual Live Nativity, as in previous years, was held in the parking lot of Lambie Funeral Home, at Rowland Avenue and Rhawn Street this past Saturday.
Families young and old alike came from around the Northeast to pet a live camel, sheep and baby goats and see baby Jesus, Mary, Joseph, shepherds and the three wise men. And of course, Santa was there. continue reading »

A fundraising event a couple years in the making will culminate later this month when Mayfair residents come together to rebuild Mayfair Memorial Playground.
After teaming up with KaBOOM!, getting business sponsorships and working with the School District of Philadelphia to secure the sight, the Mayfair Civic Association is now looking for volunteers to help with the build. continue reading »

During its regularly scheduled meeting this week, the School Reform Commission is expected to weigh in Wednesday on the next step in rebuilding the Mayfair Memorial Playground.
A vote will be taken on whether or not to approve an $80,000 gift from playground-building organization KaBOOM! Pending a supportive vote, the School District of Philadelphia will sign a letter of permission to build. Mayfair community members will then be able to schedule their design and build days to re-install a playground at the Rowland Avenue and Vista Street site.
The SRC meeting begins at 2 p.m. in the auditorium at the School District of Philadelphia, 440 N. Broad St. Meetings are open to the public.

A robbery suspect was shot last night in Mayfair at Rowland Avenue and Brighton Street.
According to reports, a man ordered a drink at McNally’s Tavern around 11 p.m., was turned away when he didn’t have ID. The male returned with two companions, all wearing hoodies to hide their faces.
With guns pointed at two off-duty officers in the bar, the men stole a small amount of money and one of the officer’s badges. The second officer fired at the men inside the bar, then proceeded to chase them. continue reading »

The Mayfair Civic Association will host a followup meeting tomorrow night in relation to the prop0sed Paddy Whacks at Frankford Avenue and Glenview Street.
While the Civic has already sided with the neighbors to oppose the zoning, Paddy Whacks owners will still have a chance to present a case to the Zoning Board of Adjustment. Tomorrow night’s meeting is meant to inform residents about the ZBA hearing and discuss a plan for it. continue reading »

What is it that motivates, or fails to motivate, an adolescent to learn? Both the Pennsylvania School Board and Abraham Lincoln High School, located on Ryan and Rowland avenues, opted to explore a possible answer to this question by completely restructuring the 60-year-old building.
According to project manager JCMS Inc., the renovation waves a price tag of $70 million on the recently finished construction of the new school building in September 2009.

Members of the Mayfair Civic Association came together last night to update residents on pressing topics, like plans to rebuild Mayfair Memorial Playground, the Fallen Heroes Run and four recent zoning issues.
With little more than four months until the annual Fallen Heroes Run, Civic Association President Joe De Felice is pushing for funding to rebuild the playground off of Rowland Avenue at Lincoln High School, which is currently set for groundbreaking following the run. continue reading »
