As PGW crews tried to fix a high pressure gas leak Jan. 18, a furnace inside a chiropractic office ignited the blaze. The explosion killed 19-year-old PGW employee Mark Keeley. continue reading »

UPDATE (Sept. 15, 9:28 pm) — HCA President Fred Moore tells us the Holmesburg Library will re-open in two weeks. This information came from the office of Congresswoman Allyson Schwartz.

Last night was the first of many bi-monthly and monthly meetings for the Tacony Civic Association and Holmesburg Civic Association, respectively.

The two, who worked together on zoning issues over the summer, held their first civic meetings of the 2010-2011 seasons. Each drew between 20 and 30 residents, and board members at both tackled questions about zoning and I-95 roadwork. continue reading »

newsFriday -- It was reported over the weekend that Congresswoman Allyson Schwartz’s office was threatened Wednesday. Northeast resident Jesse Keel, 44, called Schwartz’s office Wednesday to report a problem. When he felt the answer he received wasn’t helpful, Keel reportedly threatened the congresswoman. Though he was discharged from a hospital, Keel will now undergo a psychiatric evaluation to determine if he can stand trial. continue reading »

“I will carry that message back,” is the answer most Holme Circle residents heard Wednesday night as they voiced concerns over the future of the Stokes house.

The house — a notable farmhouse among a sea of twins at 2976-80 Welsh Rd. — faces a questionable future as the owners, the Stokes family, prepare to move on.

Though the house dates back to the 19th Century, the Stokes family has owned the house for the last 70 years. But with the family spreading out and the cost of upkeep increasing, Samuel “Buzz” Stokes has plans to sell. And Holme Circle residents have plans to protect their neighborhood. continue reading »
