Here’s a summary of the week’s Northeast news we didn’t cover. See others here.

As previously reported on NEast Philly, William Gill, 33, robbed a TD Bank at 3930 Woodhaven Rd. on Jan. 19. Since then, the FBI has figured out more details about Gill, including that he was involved in other crimes such as other bank robberies, stealing a van and stabbing two people. After fleeing the scene of the stabbing, Gill was heard saying that he “Would not be taken alive by cops,” according to authorities.

Despite this claim, reports have said that Gill has been arrested in Fort Lauderdale, Fl., for drug possession under the name of Michael Gill. Gill’s last known residence was at the 5000-block of Homestead Street.

Last night’s Somerton Civic Association meeting began with the Pledge of Allegiance and a recap of what happened in the neighborhood over the summer. President Mary Jane Hazell apologized for the unusually low turnout (about 30 people), since many of the seniors are down the Shore.

Since the final meeting for summer ended in June, three major zoning cases came up, two involving business signs on Bustleton Avenue, and one involving a residential property. The owner of 10224 Bustleton Avenue has a continuance hearing scheduled for October, as he is seeking to have his garage zoned for additional housing. This will be his second appeal; the first was refused.

Board members and attendees then heard three new zoning cases – one from a resident, and two from business owners. continue reading »
